Beth & Dries traveling to South Africa
|
On Tuesday, September 23 Dries departed Cleveland and landed in Cape Town 24 hours later. For the first week he worked on building ecumenical relationships between the South African Church community and the Israel Palestine Mission Network of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the Synod of the Covenant of the Presbyterian Church (USA). On Monday, September 29, Beth joined him and they celebrated Dries' parents' 50th wedding anniversary with the rest of the family. On Friday October 10th, Beth and Dries are invited guests at the opening of a "Therapeutic Garden" at the TC Newman Hospital in Paarl, South Africa, which was completed through the generous donation of Gayle and David Noble through Westminster Presbyterian Church. Beth and Dries will be back in the office on Thursday, October 16.

Action Alert |

The 2014 Midterm elections on November 4 are just one month away! Are you registered to vote? You can still register to vote in 25 states. What is your plan-- are you voting early or voting on election day? Are you encouraging your friends, neighbors, and members of your church to vote? If you are outside of the state in which you are registered to vote, make sure to request an absentee ballot in time (this is different for every state). For those who aren't eligible to vote, use your voice to encourage other people to vote! Voting is both one of our fundamental rights as citizens and is a vital way we speak to the values of the kingdom of God in the political realm.
Click here to take a pledge to vote today.
As a member of a congregation, how is your congregation getting out the vote? You might assume churches can't be involved in elections because of their non-partisan 501(c)(3) status, but there are many ways that you can. Here are some do's and don'ts of congregation and clergy involvement in political action.

Welcoming our
Mission to the USA Participant
|
Westminster Presbyterian Church will welcome Andria Bannourah, a 27-year old man from Bethlehem, Palestine on Sunday October 19 as part of the Synod of the Covenant Mission to the USA program. Andria lives with his family in Bethlehem where he is a medical engineer and is a member of the Greek Orthodox Church. Motivated by his faith and volunteer work through his church, he is an active member of the Palestine Youth Movement where he mentors young people, and he actively works to address the political situation in Israel/Palestine by improving relationships among all peoples, Christians, Jews, and Muslims. He also works to alleviate poverty and addresses issues related to living under occupation. As part of the Christian community in Palestine, Andria will bring a unique perspective to Westminster as he shares with us what life is like in the West Bank under Israeli Occupation.
During his time in Wooster, Andria will also share his perspective on the Kairos Palestine document, a statement from Palestinian Christians speaking strongly against the illegal occupation of Palestinian land and the oppression of its people. Andria will be with us for three weeks until November 6th after which he will leave for home.
We are hopeful that members of Westminster will extend hospitality to Andria while he is with us in Wooster. If you would like to invite him for dinner along with your family and/or friends we encourage you to contact Carly Jones to set up a time. As pastor Dries said in his sermon on Sunday, September 21st, this is a wonderful opportunity for us to join in the work of nonviolence and peacemaking as a community of faith who follows the way of Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus ate with many people and through eating he showed us that a different reality is possible.

Green Tip of the Week |
Eco-Friendly Clothing
Whether its the water used in leather processing, or the working conditions of the people who make our clothes, the apparel industry has environmental and social impacts. But there are things we can do to make it better. Here are some tips for greening your wardrobe:
- Buy resale or consignment.
Visit your local resale shop to find unique fashions without breaking the bank. Places like Goodwill, Salvation Army, and Buffalo Exchange have unique items at low prices, and keep clothing out of landfills.
- Check the label. Avoid clothing that requires dry cleaning. Natural fibers are often easier to care for at home. They can be washed in cool water and hung out to dry, reducing chemical use and energy, too.
- Try fabric blends. Fabrics that are a blend of cotton and synthetic fibers can usually be laundered at home.
- Dress down. Fancier outfits seem to require more dry cleaning than casual wear. Encourage your office to implement a "casual day" on Fridays.
- Recycle. Don't toss your old togs in the trash. Donate them to a resale shop or a charity drop-off box, or throw a yard sale. Even your old tennis shoes can be recycled at any Nike Store.
- Wash Sparingly. Levi Strauss' CEO Chip Bergh and designer Tommy Hilfiger have both advised their customers to refrain from washing jeans...like, at all. Even if the no-wash treatment isn't for you, chances are your clothes could handle several wearings before washing. You'll save water, and the life of your clothes.

"We are an Intentionally Inclusive Church"
Westminster Presbyterian Church embraces the "house" metaphor for our community as we worship at the Westminster Church House and have a strong sense of hospitality and desire to be a welcoming and inclusive church for all. We endeavor to give voice to a "progressive" expression of Christianity that emphasizes among other things:
- intellectual integrity in matters of faith;
- acceptance of all people regardless of race, creed, age, cultural background, or sexual orientation;
- openness toward the value of other religious traditions;
- a strong commitment to social justice, peacemaking, and the care of our planet.
Sincerely,
|
