Food & Faith
|
 What does it mean to eat as a Christian? For us, eating is a spiritual act because food is sacred. Both the Old and New Testaments are full of stories and teachings about food. The Eucharist is a key part of our faith, but it's more than a Sunday ritual. For early Christians, bread was broken at every meal. Eating was an expression of their faith. We modern Christians are called to re-establish right relationship with food. ...>>>

Reflection of the Week
|
This summer the Weekly News will be taking a break. We will be back in August. We want to thank all our subscribers and are proud that we average about 90 people opening our publication. I do encourage you during our summer hiatus to visit Westminster's website for up- to-date events listings, worship themes, and calendar changes.
In June I will be attending (as commissioner from our Presbytery) the 221st General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) which will be held from June 14 to 21, 2014 at the COBO Center in downtown Detroit, Michigan. Follow this link to read more about the assembly and follow events as it happens.
May your summer be a time of refreshment and renewal,
Dries

Adult Education
|

The Adult Education class for Sunday, June 1, 2014will continue the discussion of Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer's book, Authentic Hope: It's the End of the World as We Know It but Soft Landings Are Possible. The discussion will begin at 9:00 AM and end at 9:45 AM and will take place in the lounge.
Last Sunday's discussion was on the topic of Chapter 5, Good Riddance to Empire, Part 2 Possibilities. We considered the extent of US military involvement worldwide in the pursuit of domination and control for US self-interests and the economic cost of this policy. This Sunday's discussion will be of Chapter 6, Values and Vision. It will focus on the values that guide our country as a people and us individually as its citizens and the vision of the future we seek for ourselves and our country.
This is a very important discussion for us at Westminster for at the core is our religious teachings and practices. Our President on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 delivered a foreign policy address at the nation's West Point Military Academy in which he stressed American exceptional-ism and spoke repeatedly about "American leadership" and "American strength." Are these the values of our religion or of the moral teachings passed on from generation to generation and which emanate from culture to culture?

College of Wooster Alumni Sunday
|
On Sunday, June 8th at 10:00am we will welcome the Rev. Dr. Deborah Meinke to Westminster for The College of Wooster Alumni Sunday. The Rev. Dr. Deborah Meinke graduated from Wooster in 1974 with a BA in Geology, studied trace fossils with Dr. Richard Osgood, and among other activities sang with Dr. Gore and in Westminster church choir. With husband Dave, she moved to Yale University to study evolutionary biology and vertebrate paleontology, and was awarded a Ph.D. in 1980. Deb and Dave have lived in Stillwater, OK since 1982, where Dave is on the Botany faculty, while Deb taught biology and advised numerous students at Oklahoma State University. Children Laura and Scott were born and raised in Stillwater, and now are successfully launched into adulthood. Deb earned her M.Div. from Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa, OK in 2004. She served Grace Presbyterian Church in Grove, OK, then successive interim pastorates in Claremore and Norman, OK. Deb is now the Stated Clerk of Cimarron Presbytery, allowing her to live at home in Stillwater, and still make it to all the relevant meetings. Deb likes herb gardening, reading, traveling, yoga, and cooking, not necessarily in that order . Deb remains fascinated by science and is thoroughly committed to evolutionary biology and theology.

Woman Screamed at and Harassed At Border Patrol Checkpoint

 | Woman Screamed at and Harrassed At Border Patrol Checkpoint |
Arivaca is a warm and vibrant community on the Arizona side of the U.S./ Mexico border. Unfortunately for residents, it is also a highly militarized and surveilled zone. In order to go to work, school, or the store, residents must pass through the Arivaca Rd. checkpoint, 25 miles north of the border, where they are subject to abuse and interrogation by Border Patrol agents. Racial profiling and civil rights violations have become the norm. In this video, a white women is screamed at by an agent and forced to exit her car. Community members know that this kind of abuse is typical and often much worse for residents of color. The checkpoint is also responsible for forcing migrants to walk through remote and dangerous desert in order to enter the country, resulting in many deaths. For these and many other reasons community members are fighting to have the checkpoint removed. You can learn more about their campaign at: http://phparivaca.org/

Alternative Gift Market Coordinator
|

Westminster Presbyterian Church has volunteered for many years with other faith communities in Wooster to sponsor the Christmas-season Alternative Gift Market, a community event. The Alternative Gift Market supports humanitarian and environmental causes by offering donors the option to designate charitable gifts through carefully selected agencies in the name of their relatives, friends and associates.
The goal this year as in past years is to successfully raise $10,000 from AGM attenders. For many years WPC has worked with Wooster Mennonite, Unitarian Universalists, Trinity UCC, First Presbyterian and other churches in making this available to Wayne County during the early weeks of December. I have served as Westminster's lead organizer of the Alternative Gift Market for a number of years, but out-of-town family commitments now prevent me from serving in that role. If someone in the congregation would like to lead Westminster's participation in the 2014 Christmas Alternative Gift Market, please contact the Church House: cjones@wooster.edu.
You may visit the Alternative Gifts International Website for more information. I would be delighted to tell you more about what is expected of a Westminster coordinator.

Green Tip of the Week
|
 If you live in a typical U.S. home, your appliances and home electronics, from clothes washers and dryers, to computers, to water heaters are responsible for about 20 percent of your energy bills. The following tip could save energy and money. Shop for the ENERGY STAR and EnergyGuide labels when shopping for home appliances. The ENERGY STAR label is the government's seal of energy efficiency estimating an appliance's energy consumption. Shop for the ENERGY STAR and EnergyGuide labels when shopping for home appliances. "We are an Intentionally Inclusive Church"
Westminster Presbyterian Church embraces the "house" metaphor for our community as we worship at the Westminster Church House and have a strong sense of hospitality and desire to be a welcoming and inclusive church for all. We endeavor to give voice to a "progressive" expression of Christianity that emphasizes among other things:
- intellectual integrity in matters of faith;
- acceptance of all people regardless of race, creed, age, cultural background, or sexual orientation;
- openness toward the value of other religious traditions;
- a strong commitment to social justice, peacemaking, and the care of our planet.
Sincerely,
|
