Message from Dries
Thank You!
As some of you might know, I am leaving for South Africa
to be with my mom and dad after complications following my father's knee replacement surgery. Although he is doing very well and is now on his way to recovery, I feel the need to be with them during this time of convalescence.  I will be leaving this Monday, February 10th, returning Thursday the 20th, and will be back in the pulpit on Sunday, Feb. 23rd.
Personally, I am so thankful to each one of you who have encouraged me and made it possible to take this time away and attend to my own needs and that of my family.   Thank you for your sincere concern and warmheartedness!

Scout Sunday
Scouts This Sunday we will be celebrating Boy Scout Troop 61 and their service to our community and families. We are very fortunate to have John Veney as Westminster's representative to the Scouts and are thankful for his bridge-
building work in increasing communication and cooperation between our organizations. Scouts Troop 61
This past year has been a huge transition for the Boy Scouts of America; as of January 1st, openly gay youth are now allowed to participate in scouting.  As Pastor I am thankful for our Troop and their leadership and the way they have managed this transition which has led to growth of the Troop.

Annual Meeting of the Congregation
Thanks to all of you who attended the Annual Meeting of the Congregation.  As a church we are thankful to our elders and leaders who worked hard to prepare the report and who put a tremendous amount of time and energy in preparation for the meeting.  I am excited to report that after the meeting we had people come forward who are willing to serve in leadership and we have experienced a new wave of people willing to help with our Hospitality Ministry on a Sunday morning.  If you were not able to attend the meeting you can still download the report (pdf) or contact Carly by e-mail or at 330-263-2398 and she will be glad to mail you a copy.

See you on Sunday,
Dries
"Souper Bowl of Caring"

You have made a difference in Wooster!  Our Sunday School children collected $315 for the Trinity UCC Breakfast Program. Each weekday, Trinity serves a free hot breakfast to anyone in the Wooster community. On an average morning, they serve approximately 60 guests.  Thank you for your generous contributions toward helping those in need in our community.

Sunday School

Last week we had an awesome discussion on the scripture reading-- the Beatitudes. We brainstormed what it means to be "successful" in society, then we read the scripture reading and came up with another list on what it means to be "blessed". We spent some time comparing the two lists and asking questions about what Jesus meant. Everyone was very engaged!

This Sunday I will be at the UKirk Winter Retreat, so there will be no Sunday School, but please join our church family as we celebrate Scout Sunday!                                                            Evangeline Smith

February Vegan Meal

Join Westminster for our monthly Vegan Potluck (third Thursday of most months) on Thursday, February 20, at 6:00 p.m. in Mackey Hall.  This meal is a great opportunity for Westminster members, Wooster community members, and College of Wooster students to enjoy delicious food and good fellowship while learning more about sustainable living. Just bring a pot-luck dish containing no meat, dairy, or eggs (no need for students to bring a dish, but always welcome).

Come early at 4:45 for "Cooking with Natalie" as she will be doing a demonstration of Thai tofu tacos/lettuce wraps.

Program: Come hear College of Wooster first years, Elizabeth Burroughs and Chrissy O'Grady talk about "WWOOF-ing," (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms: Linking volunteers with organic farms and growers).  The goal of the organization is to provide an environment where a visitor can live on a farm (for as long as they want to) and help with the daily farm work. The hosting farms and the visitors do not exchange money but exchange services.

RSVP through Sign Up Genius, after worship on the sign up board in the back of Mackey Hall by the nametags, or to Carly in the Church office.

Green Tip of the Week

Cabin Fever?

Feeling stuck inside this winter? So is the air inside your home.

Recent research has found that air inside homes can be more polluted than the air in the largest, most industrialized cities.Indoor air pollution is caused by a lack of ventilation and can lead to more frequent colds, respiratory problems, and other ailments and diseases. Here are tips to keep your home and your family healthy:

  • Keep the house clean.
  • Ventilate the attic and crawl spaces to prevent moisture buildup.
  • Clean humidifiers regularly and refill with fresh water daily.
  • Thoroughly clean and dry water-damaged carpets or consider removing or replacing them.
  • Minimize pollutants in basements.
  • Be careful when you clean.

"We are an Intentionally Inclusive Church"
Westminster Presbyterian Church embraces the "house" metaphor for our community as we worship at the Westminster Church House and have a strong sense of hospitality and desire to be a welcoming and inclusive church for all. We endeavor to give voice to a "progressive" expression of Christianity that emphasizes among other things:
  • intellectual integrity in matters of faith;
  • acceptance of all people regardless of race, creed, age, cultural background, or sexual orientation;
  • openness toward the value of other religious traditions;
  • a strong commitment to social justice, peacemaking, and the care of our planet.
Sincerely,
Andries J. Coetzee
