Message from Dries

Westminster's website states that "Westminster is a place where you can be yourself, where you will be accepted, and where you can make a difference!" It is especially the last part of the sentence that held true this past week as nearly twenty members of Westminster gathered at Second Baptist Church to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. One of Westminster's members and attendees of the service commented; "It always takes a bit of effort to push yourself out of your comfort zone to attend a service in another community of faith, especially one of an ethnic group different than yours, but the rewards are tremendous. Not only do you get to know new people, experience different traditions through eating a meal and worshiping together, but you also make a difference by crossing boundaries that keeps us apart."

2014 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration in Wooster, Ohio
|
Th is coming Sunday we continue our celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King as we focus on criminal justice. Our guest preacher will be Rev. Cynthia F. Burse, who will inspire us through her sermon entitled "I Feel Like a Child of God This Morning". After worship we will "extend the table" as we gather for our monthly Social Justice Potluck. If you have not done so, please sign up and plan to attend this gathering where you will learn more about the U.S. prison system.
See you on Sunday,
Dries

January/February Social Justice Meal
|
As part of our focus on Criminal Justice, we will learn more about the topic at our January/February Social Justice Meal after worship on Sunday, January 26 with the Rev. Cynthia F. Burse as our speaker. Cynthia is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry (D. Min.) degree in "Prisons, Public Policy, and Trans-formative Justice" at New Brunswick Theological Seminary in New Brunswick, NJ. She is also the Principle of The House of Redemption, a non-profit faith community that helps citizens returning home post-incarceration to secure and establish homes, provides various related educational programs and activities, promotes public awareness regarding the issue of mass incarceration, and contributes to research in the field of reentry housing.
A main dish will be provided. We ask members of the congregation to bring fruit, salad, or dessert to round out the table. No need for students to bring a dish; just come!

Student Ministry Opportunity
|
Hungry students need you! Our monthly UKirk meeting is scheduled for next Thursday, Jan. 30 at 6pm (not our regular meeting time due to winter break and our upcoming retreat). Each month we share a meal together, an important part of our fellowship. Would you be willing to provide a vegetarian main dish, a salad, or a dessert? Please let Beth know if you can support our student ministry with a gift of love from your kitchen.

Last week we made a Souper Bowl of Caring poster together and talked about what that organization does!
This Sunday we will meet at the regular time (9:45am) in the Sunday School room. Chris Kovach will be joining us to discuss the UCC Breakfast Program since the proceeds from Souper Bowl of Caring will be going directly to that wonderful ministry right here in Wooster!
Additionally, we will be helping Kaarle with a Boy Scout activity and ask ourselves what it means to have a relationship with God, and how we can strengthen that relationship.

"We are an Intentionally Inclusive Church"
Westminster Presbyterian Church embraces the "house" metaphor for our community as we worship at the Westminster Church House and have a strong sense of hospitality and desire to be a welcoming and inclusive church for all. We endeavor to give voice to a "progressive" expression of Christianity that emphasizes among other things:
- intellectual integrity in matters of faith;
- acceptance of all people regardless of race, creed, age, cultural background, or sexual orientation;
- openness toward the value of other religious traditions;
- a strong commitment to social justice, peacemaking, and the care of our planet.
Sincerely,
|
