Message from Dries
Stewardship Sunday

Hopefully you have received your "Pursuing Fruitfulness" (pdf) newsletter in the mail. This coming Sunday, November 17th is Stewardship Commitment Sunday.  As we prayerfully consider our financial commitment this coming weekend to the ministry of Westminster, I want you to keep in mind that turning in your pledge card and making your financial commitment is a symbolic action of a commitment much deeper and broader.

The commitment I am talking about, and that Stewardship represents, is a willingness to respond to the transforming ministry of Jesus of Nazareth.

This transformation Jesus talked about, and lived, is radical. It asks from us a commitment to journey within community and a willingness to transform as we continually become more aware and mindful, opening our lives to the present moment, leading us to "joy, compassion, forgiveness, and work for justice" [1] so we can transform the lives of others in the name of Jesus of Nazareth.

I want us to keep this transformation in mind as we so easily reduce Stewardship to the giving of money to the church. Contemplate this weekend how Westminster has transformed your life and in return how you can transform the lives of others ... that is what Stewardship is about!

I hope to see you in worship when we as a community commit ourselves anew to journey with one another on The Way!

Blessings,

Dries

P.S. At its October meeting Session approved vacation for me next week.  I am very thankful to Linda Morgan Clement who will be preaching next Sunday.

"Pursuing Fruitfulness" Stewardship 2014

 Make your 2014 financial commitment to Westminster this Sunday, November 17.

This coming weekend, as you consider how you will support Westminster with your talents and financial resources, please also consider why you are doing so. If you have not read or received your "Pursuing Fruitfulness" Newsletter, please  download it here in pdf.  In this Stewardship publication you will read the stories of members and friends of Westminster who have been transformed by the ministry of this community of faith.

As a Stewardship Committee we are convinced that by enthusiastically and generously accepting the invitation to contribute to Westminster you too will experience the transformation expressed in these stories. You will do so knowing that in the name of Jesus of Nazareth, you will make a difference in the year to come.

"Commitment Sunday" is this Sunday, November 17th.  We invite you to bring your completed pledge card with you to church and place it in the offering plate. If you cannot attend worship on Sunday, please return your pledge card by mail in the envelope provided through the mailing.

Sincerely,

Bill Weiss, Caryl Slater, Shelley Peterson, and Dries Coetzee

Conversation with Alex McNeill, Thursday, November 21st at 7:00pm in The Lounge of the Westminster Church House

You are invited to join Westminster as we welcome Alex McNeill, Executive Director of More Light Presbyterians, on Thursday, November 21st at 7pm for a conversation in The Lounge of Westminster Presbyterian Church House. Alex is an openly transgender man, and a nationally known educator and advocate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) Christians. As executive director, he helps MLP chart a new strategic direction to help empower individuals to become advocates for LGBTQ inclusion and equality in their own congregations and communities.

More Light Presbyterians is an organization dedicated to promoting acceptance and inclusion of LGBTQ people in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and wider society. McNeill is the first transgender person to lead a mainline Protestant faith-based organization. A transgender person is someone whose sex at birth is opposite from who they know they are on the inside. Many transgender people are prescribed hormones by their doctors to change their bodies. Some undergo surgery as well.

"I'm honored to join More Light, which has always been on the forefront of the Christian tradition of fostering acceptance for the most vulnerable among us. I look forward to building on this proud tradition to create a fully welcoming church," said Alex McNeill.

McNeill has personally trained hundreds of Christians to become community leaders through the Institute for Welcoming Resources and the Reconciling Ministries Network. He has also led departments, managed programs, and raised funds at Equality Maryland and the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice. He also played a key role organizing faith communities for the passage of Amendment 10A in the PC(USA) and of marriage equality legislation in Maryland.

McNeill has also campaigned for ballot measures and legislation to promote LGBTQ rights. He helped win ordination equality for LGBTQ Presbyterians in 2011, and celebrated that success by becoming the first openly transgender ministry candidate from his home presbytery in Western North Carolina. His journey to ordination is currently being chronicled in the documentary, Out of Order.

Leadership training will be the cornerstone of McNeill's work with MLP. "The more we encourage our supporters to share their knowledge, skills and calling, the more our denomination and community will look like God's kin-dom," he said.   Alex holds a Master of Divinity from Harvard Divinity School, and a Bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. He currently resides just outside of Washington, DC with his wife and three dogs.

Alternative Gift Market
Alternative Gift Market

On December 1st, Westminster and other area churches invite you to First Presbyterian Church in Wooster for the 2013 Alternative Gift Market from 12:00 to 2:30. This festive event is an opportunity to get an early start on your Christmas shopping and simultaneously support various life-giving projects from around the world, including our own neighborhoods. You will be able to purchase $5.00 shares on any of thirty projects that provide food for the hungry, care for the sick, shelter for the homeless, renewal for our endangered planet, and much more - truly meaningful alternatives to the usual holiday gifts - in honor of your family, friends, neighbors, colleagues and children's teachers.   Those shares then can be sent to friends and family on your Christmas mailing list.

The Church Responds

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance

Philippines

Our prayers are with you

Lord our God, be the provider of your people's needs according to your riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
(from Phil. 4:19)

Super Typhoon Haiyan left monumental devastation when it struck the central Philippines on November 8. The storm, known as Yolanda in the Philippines, has been identified as one of the worst storms in recorded history.  Reports indicate severe destruction, with damaged roads and buildings, downed power lines and telecommunications, and flooded villages. Hundreds of thousands of people are displaced. The areas hit cover already-poverty-stricken communities, which have suffered from successive and simultaneous emergencies. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is working in collaboration with our mission partner, the National Council of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP), and other members of ACT Alliance to respond to this crisis. Initial response includes the provision of nonfood items, material resources, drinking water, emergency-shelter kits and cash-for-work-programs. Your prayers and financial support are needed!

Green Tip of the Week

Since most heat loss in your home occurs through and around the windows, draw your drapes at sunset. If you can line your drapes with old bed sheets or other material, they'll prove even more effective in cutting down on your heating costs. You can also buy insulating drapes, which incorporate layers of insulating material, a radiant barrier, and a moisture-resistant layer to prevent condensation.

"We are an Intentionally Inclusive Church"
Westminster Presbyterian Church embraces the "house" metaphor for our community as we worship at the Westminster Church House and have a strong sense of hospitality and desire to be a welcoming and inclusive church for all. We endeavor to give voice to a "progressive" expression of Christianity that emphasizes among other things:
  • intellectual integrity in matters of faith;
  • acceptance of all people regardless of race, creed, age, cultural background, or sexual orientation;
  • openness toward the value of other religious traditions;
  • a strong commitment to social justice, peacemaking, and the care of our planet.
Sincerely,
