Message from Dries
Oak Hill 13 Worship This past week was a wonderful one for our family!  Beth and I had a stay-cation while the boys celebrated the joys of summer and Christian fellowship at camp.  There was no better way for us to "re-enter" after our time away than the outdoor service at Oak Hill Park.
Oak Hill 13 Music Not only was it a spiritual experience, but it was a joy to be in fellowship with so many of you in a such a splendid parcel of nature right in our backyard. I personally will remember the children playing in the patch of wildflowers during our silent prayer, the music, Mike & Cara saying farewell as they move to Indianapolis, grown-ups appreciating and identifying wildflowers after Oak Hill 13 Endalkachew & Dallas the service, and the enjoyable lunch we shared. Those of you who were there will also have personal moments of grace to recall. I want to thank all of you who made this possible as it takes a lot of volunteers to get everything ready. Most of all we want to thank those in our community, including the Noble family, who secured a sacred space like this for all of us to enjoy.
This week Beth and I, along with College of Wooster students Evangeline Smith and Emi Donato, are attending "Shared Space". "Shared Space is an ecumenical campus ministry leadership conference that takes place in Chicago.  Collegiate ministers from across five denominations will gather where they will each hold their respective events while intentionally sharing space, learning, meals, and other gatherings."
I am very thankful for Jim Collier who will preach on Sunday, June 30th in my absence, as Beth and I will be visiting friends in Chicago after the conference.  Beth and I will be back in the office on Tuesday, July 2nd.
Next week there will be no Weekly News as we celebrate our nation's independence.  In worship on July 7th we will "think critically about the degree to which the United States (or any nation) is truly an environment of liberty and justice for all. What needs to happen for all in this nation to live in liberty and justice? [1]"
Blessings and see you next week,
Dries

Thank you, Westminster!
Alazar at Camp 2013 I want to start by thanking all of Westminster for letting me go to Zanesfield for the second annual Multi Cultural Youth Conference (MCYC). I had such an amazing experience this week. I met so many different people and couldn't have asked for a better week. I know God has my back no matter what I do or where I go in life. I also really enjoyed the activities we had there. I'm hoping that I'll be able to keep going to Multi Cultural Youth Conference as it keeps growing and improving.

Endalkachew Camp 2013Dear Westminster Church Family,
I had a great time at Camp Wakonda!  One thing I learned there is that they accept everyone who comes there; for example, I had a gay kid in my camp.  The counselors and campers were very nice and we learned things about Christianity. We also played outside games like Capture the Flag and Escape from Split Rock.  Escape from Split Rock is where you hide in the dark and try to blow out one candle that is in the middle of a trail, but if you get caught you will have to go back to the starting point.
I had so much fun there. Thanks for giving me this experience,

Endalkachew

Green Tip of the Week

Eating Lower on the Food Chain- Meatless Mondays

Our huge meat consumption, aided by high levels of sugar and fatty foods, is helping fuel the obesity epidemic. According to the Archives of Internal Medicine, eating red meat every day increases your risk of dying from cancer or heart disease by 30%. Higher morality rates are also found in those who eat processed meats.

The good news is there are simple lifestyle changes you can make every Monday that will have a profound impact. One of the easiest things to do is skip meat and eat lower on the food chain. That means choosing fresh fruits and vegetables that aren't processed, coated in high-fructose corn syrup or bathed in fat. Of course you can eat three vegetarian meals a day and still find your calorie intake is high and you lack vital nutrients. But, by cutting out meat on Monday, you're already taking a step in the right direction.

According to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), the numerous health benefits of a plant-based diet include:

    1. Prevents cancer. Veggie foods are low in saturated fat, high in fiber and filled with cancer-fighting phytochemicals.

    2. Prevents heart disease. According to the PCRM, "animal products are the main source of saturated fat and the only source of cholesterol in the diet.'

    3. Lowers blood pressure. Regardless of sodium levels, studies have found a plant-based diet results in lower blood pressure levels.

    4. Prevents or reverses diabetes. A combination of regular exercise and a low-fat plant-based diet can help to control or eliminate adult-onset diabetes.

    5. Reduces your chance of developing gallstones or kidney stones. Again, numerous studies have linked plant-based diets to lowering your chance of developing either.

    6. Decreases your risk of osteoporosis. In societies with primarily plant-based diets, generally lower rates of osteoporosis exist.

The benefits of going meatless just one day a week are clear. But if this seems daunting, don't fret. There is a wealth of resources to help you make the transition.

"We are an Intentionally Inclusive Church"
Westminster Presbyterian Church embraces the "house" metaphor for our community as we worship at the Westminster Church House and have a strong sense of hospitality and desire to be a welcoming and inclusive church for all. We endeavor to give voice to a "progressive" expression of Christianity that emphasizes among other things:
  • intellectual integrity in matters of faith;
  • acceptance of all people regardless of race, creed, age, cultural background, or sexual orientation;
  • openness toward the value of other religious traditions;
  • a strong commitment to social justice, peacemaking, and the care of our planet.
Sincerely,
Andries J. Coetzee
