Household Items: These items are in very short supply: queen and king sheet sets, toasters, coffee pots, pots and pans, large skillets, bath towels, and silverware.
Toys/Gift Items: Little Tikes, Playskool, and Fisher-Price toys that are in great shape are items that work well for the December Toy Project.  Currently they need gifts for teen boys, and children ages 6-11.  Suggestions are: sports bags, shaving kits, sleep pants and slippers, room decor items, MP3 players, clock radios, wallets, teen books, Lego sets, Hot Wheel toys, K-nex, and Star Wars items.
Volunteers Needed: They are currently looking for volunteers to work as summer substitutes in their clothing room, on an "as needed" basis.  If you are interested, please call Laura Groves at 330-262-1662 ext. 213.  Other available opportunities can be found at www.ptpm.net.
Message from Dries
Pentecost Logo This coming Sunday we will gather for worship to celebrate Pentecost Day. Most of us have it right remembering Pentecost as the day on which the church was born with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, made evident by tongues of flame and rushing wind. From here the disciples went forth and preached in every language creating a community of believers that stretched across all races, cultures, and nationalities.
What we very often miss, especially more progressive people of faith, is that the Pentecost is not an isolated event in history, but something that happens every day and yes, even here at Westminster. Following the Lectionary we will read from Acts 2: 1-21 and Genesis 11:1-9. I will share my own Pentecost experience and also explore how Westminster expands the vision of the work of the Spirit that continues to fall afresh on us.

Blessings and see you in worship,
Dries

PS:  If you bring new toothbrushes to church on Sunday, Beth and I will take them with us as we support CAMO's "Taste of Culture"  on Sunday afternoon.  Or if you are able, take them over to Orrville yourself, get a free prize and find out more about CAMO and Honduran culture.

2013 Pentecost Offering - Anchorage Presbyterian Church, Anchorage, KY
Westminster will receive the Presbyterian Church (USA) Pentecost Offering on the Day of Pentecost, May 19th.  This offering provides a direct way to meet the needs of children at risk, youth, and young adults. Congregations are encouraged to keep 40 percent of the Offering to support ministries benefiting these age groups in their communities. The General Assembly's portion (60 percent) provides leadership development opportunities for Presbyterian youth and young adults and supports children-at-risk programs at the national level.  Since 1998, Presbyterians of all ages have raised more than $8 million for these ministries that benefit younger members of God's family.

Day of Pentecost: Praying for Citizenship, Saturday, May 18th
open arms As the Gang of Eight bill goes through the judiciary, politicians and deal cutting may drown out the moral center of the bill and the reason why immigration reform is so important: the stories and lives of the undocumented and their families.
On Saturday May 18th we will mobilize people of faith in Wayne and Holmes Counties to lift our voices with those most affected by our broken immigration system, and work to reclaim the moral center of the immigration debate, praying for them at the 10th Encounter of Hispanic Families (People of Peace in a Violent World) at Camp Luz located in Orrville, OH.
Time: 2:30 PM - 3:00 PM
Where: Camp Luz
For more information you can contact pastor Haroldo Nunes of Open Arms Hispanic Ministries at 330-933-9376

Ohio Light Opera Welcome Picnic, Monday, June 3rd

Join us on Monday, June 3rd from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. on the patio at Westminster Church House. Meet and welcome the cast, crew, and orchestra from the Ohio Light Opera to our neighborhood.   Last year we had about 140 volunteers and guests in attendance and had a wonderful time as we showed hospitality to our visitors.  This year we have also invited representatives from neighboring churches to give soloists and musicians the opportunity to sign up to participate in other churches' worship services.  In the weeks to come we will share more information about the meal.  If you would like to help, please email Beth or give her a call at 330-317-9914.  Join in on the fun that comes from working together to spread the joy of hospitality.

Cinny Gooch volunteering at the Hartville Migrant Minsitry
To Rev. Coetzee & members of Westminster Presbyterian Church,

Thank you for the inspiring and celebrative service of Witness to the Resurrection in memory of Cynthia Gooch.  She loved Westminster and enjoyed hosting families to support its mission.  She and Ross were wonderful hosts and dear friends.

Dr. James Blackwood and the members of Westminster were very helpful and influential in the discernment that led me to accept the call to ordained ministry.  May God continue to bless you.

In Christ,

Green Tip of the Week
    Tips for a Green Summer Travel Season:

  • Pack light.
    Beyond saving money, traveling smart and light also saves you stress and can actually lower the carbon footprint of your travel plans. Traveling lighter means less weight, which means less fuel for your car or plane, which means less of a negative impact on the environment. Some of the items that you will be trying to desperately cram into your luggage can be bought upon your arrival, which has a bonus of helping boost the local economy of wherever it is that you're visiting.
  • Travel green.
    More than any other thing you can do to be green on your vacation, your mode of transport has the biggest effect on the environment. There are a couple of ways to combat or alleviate this issue. First, make sure you do not fly at night. Yes, the airport is more empty and it means less lines and stress, but the contrails of a plane at night have a bigger impact on global warming than those left in the day.
    In addition, there are great resources online where you can book greener flights and save money at the same time. Alternative to flying, you could also take a train overnight while you sleep, or take a road trip with a rented hybrid car.
  • Take a "staycation"!
    Just because a place is close to you doesn't mean it isn't a blast. I know, the idea of taking a stay-cation has "lame dad idea" written all over it, but it can be a really inexpensive way to have a fun and environ-conscious vacation. Everybody wants to travel to exotic locations for their trips, but for the resourceful individuals out there, there are ways to locate local nuggets of fun. Not only will it save on travel expenses, but you will find out more about the tourist spots near where you live.
  • Outdoor entertainment.
    This one seems like a no-brainer when it comes to summer vacations, but enjoying the outdoors is a great way to be green. Take your bike out, go camping or rock climbing, or hang out at the beach. As long as you are being conscious of your waste and how you recycle, mother nature is out there for us to enjoy.
  • Green lodging.
    Eco-friendly lodging is another excellent way to travel green. With more and more people becoming green-aware, there is a rise in businesses doing the same. Not only are there plenty of green restaurants, but there are even hotels who try to operate their buildings in a way that is less harmful to the environment. You can find loads of green hotels online, all for the same prices or even cheaper than your typical lodging.
  • Play smart.
    Now that you are off enjoying your vacation, take your good green habits with you. Whether you are across the globe or in your own neck of the woods, there are everyday ways to reduce your carbon footprint while you enjoy your vacation. While you are at the hotel, remember to recycle, use less water when you shower, and re-use your towels and sheets so they are not constantly being washed. In addition, don't buy paper guides to lead you around, find paperless travel guides online.

"We are an Intentionally Inclusive Church"
Westminster Presbyterian Church embraces the "house" metaphor for our community as we worship at the Westminster Church House and have a strong sense of hospitality and desire to be a welcoming and inclusive church for all. We endeavor to give voice to a "progressive" expression of Christianity that emphasizes among other things:
  • intellectual integrity in matters of faith;
  • acceptance of all people regardless of race, creed, age, cultural background, or sexual orientation;
  • openness toward the value of other religious traditions;
  • a strong commitment to social justice, peacemaking, and the care of our planet.
Sincerely,
Andries J. Coetzee
Pastor, Westminster Presbyterian Church
