Crackers!
|
 There is a wooden barrel in the narthex, placed there by the Mission Committee. This is Westminster's "Ye Olde Cracker Barrel." Over the next two months we are challenging all to bring in different kinds of crackers and donate them to our People To People Cracker Barrel. Just think how many types of crackers are available these days - saltine crackers, Ritz crackers, oyster crackers, rye crackers...even Cracker Jacks! We'll keep a tally and share the results with you at the end of May. Get to know the cracker aisle in your local food market and let's put a box of crackers on everyone's table. |
SPRING ACADEMY OF RELIGION EXAMINES FAILING U.S. PRISON SYSTEM
|
WOOSTER, Ohio - Can a nation founded on the principles of justice and human rights possibly undo the failings of an inefficient and ineffective prison system by turning to the fundamental tenets of its faith traditions?
The 47th Spring Academy of Religion will address that question and a host of others when it presents "Bars to Our Humanity: The United States Prison System," a five-part lecture series that begins this month at The College of Wooster. The sessions will take place in Lean Lecture Room of Wishart Hall (303 E. University St.) from 7:30-9:30 p.m. every Thursday from April 11-May 9. ....>>

A Personal Invitation from Dries to attend the April 20th Mission Retreat
|
 Please look for the invitation from our Mission Cohort for the Mission Retreat on Saturday, April 20th from 9:00am till noon. I hope that you already have it on your calendar or at least that you are considering attending this morning set aside for the mission ministry of Westminster, as we need your perspective and input. At its March meeting, Session devoted most of its time to Westminster's missions. As you can imagine there is much excitement about our Community of Faith's commitment to Social Justice and what we have accomplished to further the ministry of Jesus of Nazareth locally, nationally, and internationally. This history of Westminster's commitment to peacemaking goes way back to its inception in 1874 and is indeed the vision that will help Westminster grow into its future. This vision of Westminster missions is stated on our website and is taken from and inspired by the the prophet Micah who calls us "to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8). Here at Westminster we see this verse manifested in our mission, as: To do justice we will act in solidarity with and speak on behalf of peoples deprived of their human rights, dispossessed of material well being, and suffering from violence; To love kindness we will provide assistance to the weary, hungry, and broken; and work for peace and reconciliation in the world; and To walk humbly with God we will venerate the earth and its bounty and will strive for equitable sharing and sustainability of God's world with all peoples - locally, nationally, and internationally. Although Session is excited about all we do in missions and is amazed that a relatively small group of people like us can accomplish such ministries and projects, it did become clear in our conversation that we have become so committed to our smaller groups (that is, General Mission, Immigration, Middle East Peace, and Green Peace) that we have lost the big picture of the Mission of Westminster Presbyterian Church. For newcomers to our community this can be very confusing as they are not quite sure what we stand for as a church and what it is that we are really trying to do. For others it is difficult as they want to get involved and learn of all our missions, but one almost has to make a choice for one of these four groups as it becomes impossible to attend four different meetings each month. We also realized that keeping four committees going is a lot to expect from a small group of people. So to put you at ease, at this retreat we are not looking for ways to reinvent the wheel or even come up with a list of new mission opportunities. I guarantee that it is not going to be one of "those meetings" that you attend and walk out overwhelmed as you just got volunteered by others to do something they did not want to do themselves. My prayer is, however, that it is going to be: a conversation where we will listen to all voices as we discern how we can indeed become the "Intentionally Inclusive" church we are called to be; a time for us to realize how we all fit into the Mission of Westminster and work with intentionality; and how we can move beyond "my issue" to "our mission". It is for these reasons that I want you to attend the retreat! It is about doing justice, loving kindness, and walking humbly with God; it is about following the ways of Jesus of Nazareth who multiplied fish and bread to feed five thousand and proclaimed that the kin-dom of God is at hand; and it is about the future of our Community of Faith where you are called to serve. I personally do hope to see you on Saturday, April 20th from 9:00am till noon! Thanks, Dries

This Week on our Blog and in Worship
|
In worship during these last weeks we have been talking about transformation, both personal and social and how the two are equally important to Jesus' ministry and the Christian journey.
The challenge for us at Westminster in talking about this kind of transformation is that we have been so focused on social change, our calling to engage in Social Justice issues, that we have neglected to reflect on our own relationship with God. To be honest with you, I don't think as a people of faith we are entirely to blame for this lack of talk about salvation. Most of us grew up being heavily influenced by a fundamentalist view with an overemphasis on "personal" salvation that can lead to fear, exclusion, and self-righteousness. For me, just to type the word "salvation" makes me feel uncomfortable, not to mention talking about it. As it is with the life and ministry of Jesus of Nazareth that left no stone unturned, our scripture reading for this coming Sunday will take us to that place of discomfort. We will be challenged with the story of Paul's conversion from Saul of Tarsus as he witnesses a vision of Jesus on his way to Damascus. In this dramatic story of transformation, his encounter with the risen Christ takes him from a place of fear, violence, and exclusion, to a place of inclusion as he refused to withhold regular table fellowship with Gentiles and resisted those who insisted on circumcising the gentiles. Join us this coming Sunday in worship as we talk about our own need for "conversion" and what we need to "convert" from, so we can bring about the change to realize God's kin-dom here on earth.

Celebrating Sue Brown, April 21
|
 We invite you to join Westminster in celebrating Sue Brown's 20 years of service to our community of faith. On April 21, after the 10:45 am worship service, we will share a meal in honor of Sue.
We would appreciate contributions of salad, as Sue-min will provide the main dish (meat & vegan), bread, and dessert. You are also invited to donate money towards a gift for Sue. If you wish to do so, please make your check out to WPC and write Sue Brown in the memo line. As a church we are grateful for Sue's ministry among us as secretary, a position she fulfilled with deep commitment and dedication. She has always been willing to help and serve all who enter the Church House and has been a wealth of information regarding The College and the Wooster Community. Sue is well loved by our congregation and we will miss her presence among us.

Green Tip of the Week
|
Remember to turn off your computer and monitor screen when you leave the office at night. Computers account for roughly 42 percent of the electricity used in our offices. Although many people think that turning on your computer uses a lot of electricity, it's really the same as letting it run for only 3 minutes. Computers have a long life and use 67 percent less energy if they are turned off overnight.

 "We are an Intentionally Inclusive Church"
Westminster Presbyterian Church embraces the "house" metaphor for our community as we worship at the Westminster Church House and have a strong sense of hospitality and desire to be a welcoming and inclusive church for all. We endeavor to give voice to a "progressive" expression of Christianity that emphasizes among other things:
- intellectual integrity in matters of faith;
- acceptance of all people regardless of race, creed, age, cultural background, or sexual orientation;
- openness toward the value of other religious traditions;
- a strong commitment to social justice, peacemaking, and the care of our planet.
Sincerely,
|
