Prolonged Fever During Pregnancy May Increase Autism Risk
Fever lasting longer than 1 week may increase the risk for infantile autism, a large population-based study suggests. Hjördis Ósk Atladóttir, MD, PhD, University of Aarhus, Denmark, and colleagues found that children whose mothers had a fever lasting longer than 1 week before gestational week 32 had about a 3-fold increased risk of being diagnosed with infantile autism. Pediatrics Research Update: Greater Intensity of ABA Leads to Better Outcomes
In the latest issue of Pediatrics on November 4, 2012, the abstract states "There was some evidence that greater intensity of treatment (hours per week) and greater duration (in months) led to better outcomes. The TEP agreed that children with ASD should have access to at least 25 hours per week of comprehensive intervention to address social communication, language, play skills, and maladaptive behavior. They agreed that applied behavioral analysis, integrated behavioral/ developmental programs, the Picture Exchange Communication System, and various social skills interventions have shown efficacy."
