Public Meeting Scheduled June 2 for Bike Share Project
The Village of Shorewood is conducting an open-house style public involvement meeting to discuss a proposed bike share project in the City.

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 2 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Shorewood Village Center (Shorewood Public Library lower level) located at 3920 N. Murray Avenue. The objective of this meeting is to familiarize the public with the proposed bike share system and to obtain input from residents and business owners on proposed bike share station locations for this project.

The purpose of this project is to provide an alternative mode of transportation suitable for short distance point to point trips within the Village and surrounding areas by providing users the ability to pick up a bicycle at a self-serve bike station and return it to any bike station within the system's service area.  This project is proposing to construct approximately 9 stations and provide approximately 90 bikes.  This bike share system would become part of the Bublr Bike Share system that currently serves the City of Milwaukee.

Construction is scheduled for 2017. For more information, contact Planning Director Ericka Lang at 414.847.2647 or at elang@villageofshorewood.org.

Village Inspectors Buzzing Over Bees

Since the new ordinance allowing the keeping of honeybees has passed two of the Village inspectors have taken quite a shining to the prospect, and are considering becoming beekeepers themselves.

The Planning and Development Department administers the permits for bee hives and would be happy to answer any questions you may have. Feel free to call the office or drop in with questions. Some interesting information about honeybees is:
  • Every third bite of food exists due to bee pollination
  • Honeybees are not aggressive and only sting when threatened or attacked
  • Honeybees are not at all interested in human food
  • Residents flowers and vegetable gardens will benefit tremendously from neighboring hives
  • Honeybees should not be feared, rather regarded for the extraordinary work they do

Weekly Highlight from Shorewood Schools Superintendent Bryan Davis

Last Thursday, we were proud to host a few distinguished graduates of Shorewood High School back to Shorewood for a special day of activities. We honored Jerry Harrison '67 (a former member of the Talking Heads), David Zucker '66, Jerry Zucker '68, and Jim Abrahams '62 (three filmmakers known for their movies Airplane!, Top Secret, and Naked Gun, among many others) with the Shorewood Tradition of Excellence Award. We recognized this year's honorees for their amazing achievements in the arts and entertainment field, where they have earned international acclaim as film directors, screenplay writers, musicians, and producers.

Though Jim Abrahams was not able to make it for the event, Jerry Harrison and the Zucker brothers participated in a full day's schedule, which included a Talkback and Q&A session with students, a reception at Hubbard Park with fellow graduates sponsored by the Shorewood Alumni Association, and an awards ceremony during the intermission of our South Pacific opening night production. Students were able to get great advice from these accomplished graduates during their visit with us.

You can see photos from the events here.  Having them back was a reminder of all of the things that make Shorewood a special place. Do you know a Shorewood graduate you would like to nominate for the Tradition of Excellence Award? Submit your nomination here

Health Department Highlights

Did You Know?
The week before Memorial Day, May 23-29, 2016, marks the 12th annual Healthy and Safe Swimming Week.  Swim safety is very important to prevent injuries or even drowning. Along with injury prevention it is important to be aware of recreational water illnesses (RWIs). RWIs are caused by germs spread by swallowing, breathing in mists or aerosols, or having contact with contaminated water in swimming pools, hot tubs, water parks, water play areas, interactive fountains, lakes, rivers, or oceans. Diarrhea is the most common RWI, and it is often caused by germs like Cryptosporidium, Giardia, norovirus, Shigella, and E. coli.

Protect yourself from swim related injuries and water illnesses by following these steps:
  • Check yourself! Keep the pee, poop, sweat, blood, and dirt out of the water. Make sure you shower even for just one minute prior to swimming
  • Stay out of the water if you have diarrhea or an open wound
  • Make sure a lifeguard is on duty
  • Protect yourself by using sunscreen with at least SPF 15
The North Shore Health Department assures safe water conditions for wading or swimming at Atwater, Klode and Doctor's Park beaches by routinely testing water for harmful levels of bacteria and posting signs to communicate water safety to the public during summer swimming season.
