Volunteer Applications for Wilson Drive Task Force due October 9

Task force volunteer applications are to be submitted by this Friday, October 9.  Public participation throughout this process is key to determining the most appropriate road plan for the community.

Shorewood's Road Plan identifies reconstruction of Wilson Drive in 2018. A task force is being formed now, made up of Shorewood residents, to find out what would be the best road configuration.  Wilson Drive is 66 feet wide, essentially considered a six-lane roadway.  Most of Shorewood's residential streets are 24 feet wide.

We hope you'll get involved, whether by serving on the task force or by giving your input in other ways.  Go to the Wilson Drive Task Force project page to complete an application, check the status of the project, and to sign up to receive project updates.  Questions may be directed to Trustee Paul Zovic at trusteezovic@villageofshorewood.org or Planning Director Ericka Lang at elang@villageofshorewood.org.

Village of Shorewood 2016 Proposed Budget and Long Range Financial Plan Released

The Village of Shorewood released the 2016 proposed budget and the 2016-2025 Long Range Financial Plan.

Village of Shorewood staff met with the Village Board on August 31 to discuss the Long Range Financial Plan.  The Long Range Financial Plan is used to review and analyze ways the Village will be impacted by long-range financial commitments such as state imposed property tax limits, pending employee retirements and significant upcoming capital infrastructure replacements.

By projecting these financial impacts, the Village is able to make strategic decisions related to financial policies, tax levies and utility rates so that the Village has a sound financial future.  The Long Range Financial Plan can be reviewed here.

Village of Shorewood staff will be meeting with the Village Board on five different nights in the Village Hall Court Room to go through the 2016 proposed budget.  Down below are the following dates and times of the remaining budget presentations.  Residents can access the 2016 Proposed Budget here.

Village Performs Customer Service Training for our Everyday Heroes

As part of Customer Service Week celebrations, Village employees attended a customer service refresher training.  Four separate sessions were held on two separate days to ensure that the majority of our staff was able to attend and get some useful reminders of the customer service standards we try diligently to uphold.

Part of the training included reminders on appropriate telephone/in-person greetings, word choice, time management, being respectful of people's time, listening skills, etc.  Staff also had the opportunity to view a video highlighting simple ways we can demonstrate exceptional customer service and be an "everyday (super) hero" for our customers.

Employee Wellness Program Coordinates Activities

Last Thursday and Friday, the Village's Employee Wellness Committee hosted an Obstacle Course event to encourage employees to get out and get healthy.    For 45 minutes both days, employees had an opportunity to exercise their bodies and their brains.  Challenges were held on two separate dates to assure proper coverage and to allow employees to participate.  The challenges addressed things such as dexterity, upper body strength, coordination and the ability to quickly sort and alphabetize.  Staff had a great time laughing and supporting one another through the activities.

Sustainable Shorewood Tip of the Week

Reduce toxic chemicals in your home
Many of the products we use everyday are toxic, and can be easily replaced with less toxic alternatives. Instead of commercial window cleaner, use vinegar and water. Avoid burning petroleum-based candles. Minimize use of air fresheners--many fragrances are actually air pollutants and can have negative health effects. Opt for paints and solvents with low levels of VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

Health Department Highlights

Did You Know?
Environmental health professionals protect the public's health every day through education and regulation in the areas of food safety, recreational waters, communicable disease, vector and pests, and many others. The North Shore Health Department employs a registered sanitarian to oversee inspections and licensing for food establishments, lodging facilities, and public pools for Bayside, Brown Deer, Fox Point, River Hills, Shorewood, and Whitefish Bay. During these inspections the sanitarian will make sure the establishment is using proper procedures for cooking food and sanitizing equipment; he will test samples of food to ensure they are prepared or chilled to proper temperatures; and he will check the temperature of freezers and refrigerators to make sure they are working properly to prevent the growth of bacteria. The sanitarian will also watch employees who are going through their usual routines to determine if the employees are practicing safe food handling and proper hand washing. Restaurant inspections are now available online.  Visit https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/regulations/fsrl/index.htm to learn more.
