Atwater School Celebrating Centennial

Atwater Elementary School is 100 years old. Classrooms were ready for students in grade K-8 on September 7, 1915.  Current Atwater families and staff began their centennial celebration on January 21 at Winter Sing. Students performed music from each of the past ten decades. The celebration will continue into the fall.

Formal education in the area we now know as Shorewood began in 1846 in a log house located in a clearing in the wilderness on the current Shorewood High School campus. There were thirteen pupils in the first school, which was destroyed by fire in 1864. A second log school met a similar fate in 1895.

 The Great Lakes Pet Expo!

Saturday, January 31, 2015, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. @ the Wisconsin Expo Center in State Fair Park.

Held annually on the Saturday before Super Bowl, this event has something for everyone. Live entertainment features amazing animal acts including some that have been featured on national programs such as The Tonight Show, Oprah Winfrey, Jay Leno and more!  Several hundred exhibits feature companion animals available for adoption as well as the latest and greatest pet related products and services. An education stage headlines veterinarians and industry
experts teaching small groups of attendees how to better care for their pets. Finally, the expo features Wisconsin's Largest Educational Reptile Display where attendees can meet and interact with over 50 species of reptiles.

The Great Lakes Pet Expo is different from most other shows of this magnitude because it is produced by a non-profit organization. It is a benefit for the animals of Wisconsin. All of the proceeds from this event are given back to the animals of Wisconsin by way of the non profit organizations (rescues and humane societies) who care for them. The money is raised through ticket sales and all dollars raised stay in Wisconsin. The expo production team is a group of dedicated volunteers who spend countless hours planning and executing a show we're proud to call our very own. We thank everyone who has attended the show in support of our cause. It is the animals who bring us together and you, the consumer, who make the show possible.

Winter Sidewalk Maintenance

During the winter months, Village Ordinance 466-27 requires every Shorewood property owner to keep the sidewalks adjacent to their property clear of snow and ice.

Twelve (12) hours after a snowfall the Department of Public Works will have sidewalks inspected and orange notices will be placed on door knobs of homes where the walks are not cleared.

The Police will issue citations twelve (12) hours after notices are issued and the sidewalk will be cleared with the cost billed to the adjacent property owner.

Please be a good neighbor and avoid fines and snow removal fees by clearing your walks as soon as possible following a snowfall.

It is important to note that this action is in place to assure safe walking conditions for everyone. Residents are encouraged to call the Police Department at 847.2610 to report areas that are not adequately cleared or Request Service Online

Health Tip

A workout buddy is hugely helpful for keeping motivated, but it's important to find someone who will inspire-not discourage. So make a list of all your exercise-loving friends, then see who fits this criteria.

Environmental Tip

Use durable products. Choose furniture, equipment, and tools that will stand the test of time.
