Last Call for Volunteers for 4th of July Parade!
The Shorewood Police Department is still looking for volunteers to help with traffic control at the 4th of July parade. If you can help, please contact Sgt. Charles Vander Schaaf at 414-847-2610 or email cvanderschaaf@villageofshorewood.org.
As a traffic coordinator you will be assigned an intersection to monitor. As the parade gets close, your job will be to place a barricade to stop traffic and when the parade is complete, your job will be to take it down.
By helping, you will get front row seats to watch the parade and a chance to help make Shorewood's 4th of July a safe and fun experience! Your help is needed from 2:45 p.m. until the parade is over. Contact Sgt. Vander Schaaf if you can volunteer. Thank you for your help!

4th of July Reminders
Have a happy 4th of July. While you enjoy the holiday with family and friends, please take a moment to stop and thank an on-duty public safety employee for their service.
Overnight parking restrictions will be lifted for the 4th of July holiday from Thursday, July 3 to Sunday, July 6. Residents will need to call their vehicle in on the night of July 6 for Monday morning, July 7.
Village offices will be closed on the 4th of July.

Shorewood's 4th of July Celebration!
Everyone is invited to Shorewood's 4th of July Celebration! The festivities start at 12:30 p.m. and culminate with the fireworks show at 9:30 p.m.
Activities for the 4th of July include:
- 12:30 p.m. - Shorewood High School VHE Pool All-Age free swim.
- 3 p.m. - Parade on Oakland Avenue. The parade route starts on Kensington Blvd. and goes south to Edgewood Ave. and into Spector Field.
- 4 p.m. - Free ice cream and music at Spector Field.
- 6 p.m. - Activities at Atwater Park begin. There will be refreshments for sale, music, and much more!
- 6:30 p.m. - Shorewood Concert Band Performance
- 7:30 p.m. - The Noyz Boyz and Grylz Band (sponsored by the Shorewood Men's Club)
- 8 p.m. - Flag Ceremony and the introduction of the Parade Grand Marshals.
- 9:30 p.m. - Annual fireworks show sponsored by the Shorewood Foundation

LiveWall Vertical Greening System

Wisconsin's first edible LiveWall vertical greening system was planted at the Shorewood Village Center on Monday, June 30. The garden system is located at the Murray Avenue entrance and includes tomatoes, thyme, nasturtiums, peppers, rosemary, lavender, parsley and other herbs. The plants will be maintained by members of the Shorewood Senior Center and harvested for their luncheon use throughout the summer. The LiveWall was purchased with funds from the Shorewood Garden Tour.

Redevelopment Presentation
A Village Board public hearing is scheduled on Monday, July 7, 2014. Developer General Capital worked diligently to respond to public comments on the proposed Metro Market grocery store, parking deck and six story mixed use building. After over two dozen meetings with various committees, boards, neighbors, and stakeholders, the project has been refined, offering a plethora of public amenities activating the street front. Some of the public amenities include a public pedestrian arcade, outdoor seating, a planned market space, bike share, bike parking and a bike repair station. These improvements are a result of involvement from our residents.

"Summer Sounds" Outdoor Concert - Streetlife with Warren Wiegratz Hubbard Park on Wednesday, July 9
Don't miss the first Summer Sounds concert of the season on Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at beautiful Hubbard Park along the Milwaukee River. The popular, award-winning band, Streetlife with Warren Wiegratz will be performing its smooth contemporary jazz sounds from 6-9 p.m. Bring your own lawn chair or blanket to make your listening pleasure more enjoyable as you sit back and relax in the park!  Harbor Development Update
You may have noticed some additional action taking place on the site of the new Harbor development. The demolition of the west building of the old Sherburn Place apartments began today. The east building is scheduled for demolition in approximately three (3) weeks. This will allow the North Shore Fire Department additional time to perform training exercises in the building before it is demolished.

World Cup Championship Comes to Kensington Square
The 4500 block of Oakland Avenue will be closed on Sunday, July 13, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. as the Three Lions Pub, joined by North Star American Bistro, NaNa Asian Fusion and Thief Wine, will be hosting a World Cup 2014 Festival Party. The event will feature:

Shorewood's Young Trees Get Fertilized
The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) has undertaken a partnership with Shorewood, Oak Creek and Brown Deer to demonstrate the value of fertilizing young trees with Milorganite, a locally produced nonchemical fertilizer. Recent tests have shown Milorganite to be particularly beneficial to establishing healthy young trees and MMSD is encouraging forestry departments to include Milorganite in their urban forestry planting programs. (Taylor Leitinger, UWM Environmental Science major and MMSD summer intern applied Milorganite to 35 young street trees in Shorewood as part of MMSD's Milorganite tree enhancement partnership program.) MMSD provides bulk Milorganite free to the Public Works Departments of all 28 communities within the MMSD service area.

Did You Know?
Did you know that if you want to visit a Wisconsin beach (Doctor's, Klode, Atwater, Bradford, etc.) you can check on the water quality by going to www.wibeaches.us? Many beaches have their water checked for bacteria levels anywhere from one to six times a week. These results are reported online and the water quality signs are posted at the beaches.
Regardless of the sign, always wash your hands before eating, do not drink the lake water, and take a soap shower when you return home.
