Join Us for Another Open House for Updating Shorewood's Business District Master Plan

On Thursday May 21 from 5 to 7 p.m., the Village is hosting an open house event to gather public input on potential redevelopment sites in Shorewood's business district. The process started in February and the first public meeting held on March 20 was a great success with over 80 people in attendance.

At this event, we'd like your reaction to over 10 site concepts  that will be on display.  We'd love to hear from you --  stay for 5 minutes or the whole time.

Plan updates are available on the Village's website www.villageofshorewood.org under Community Development or you may contact Planning Director Ericka Lang with questions and comments. She may be reached at 414.847.2647 or elang@villageofshorewood.org.

Historical Society to Celebrate 30th Anniversary

As a community grows so does its need to remember, record and celebrate its history.   In 1982, the Shorewood Village Board adopted a resolution establishing an ad hoc committee to draft a recommendation for a permanent Historical Society.  Trustee Michael Spector led the committee that filed Articles of Incorporation on May 7, 1984 and the Society was officially established.

Preservation and education have been the goals of the Society for 30 years. To advance those goals, an archives was established, research has been encouraged, and numerous historical programs have been presented. The Society has become the official collector of stories, pictures, newspapers and other data necessary to help current residents understand how the Village developed and to encourage Village leaders to make informed  decisions about the future.

Society members will celebrate the 30th Anniversary at their annual dinner meeting on May 12 at Hubbard Lodge.  Non-members are welcome to join the celebration.  The speaker will be Martin Hintz who will speak about Dickey Chapelle, a 1935 graduate of Shorewood High School who was a nationally recognized  photojournalist and military correspondent.  Ms.  Chapelle died in Vietnam, the first American woman journalist killed in combat.  For dinner reservation information, call 964-5258. Anyone interested in just hearing Mr. Hintz's presentation should  arrive at Hubbard Lodge by 7:45 p.m.

Stay Up-to-Date on the Roundy's Project

The Village is very excited to begin the preliminary work on the Roundy's project. The project will feature a new Metro Market and a major mixed-use building.  The new facilities would occupy the entire two blocks between Kenmore and Olive Streets on the West side of Oakland Avenue, replacing the current Pick 'n Save and abandoned Schwartz and Walgreens facilities.  To stay up-to-date on the latest developments in the Roundy's project, click here.

Little Free Library

You may have noticed that there's a new library in town; it's located at the bottom of the steps leading to the library's Murray Avenue entrance. It's a Little Free Library, one of more than 15,000 worldwide and reportedly the eighth to be erected in Shorewood.

This Little Free Library is brought to you by the Friends of Shorewood Library. The Little Free Library should come in handy when in the mood to do a bit of book browsing only to find the Shorewood Library closed. As of it's start date, the approximately 20 volumes inside included titles such as: The Color of Water, WikiLeaks, Olive Kitteridge, The Lord of the Rings, The Emerald City of Oz, and Quick Veggie Curries.

To make sure this Little Free Library is never empty, the Friends' of Shorewood Library volunteers who run the Used Book Sale have agreed to oversee its operation, keeping it stocked with a mix of fiction, non-fiction, and children's books.

Song of the Month

Fortunately, I have a son who takes me to concerts and exposes me to a lot of new music. One of the best concerts he took me to and one of the top ten concerts I have ever been to was Dave House's Revival Tour performance. Since this concert, Dave House has become one of my favorite artists. Check out, Dave House's "Pray For Tuscon".

Quote of the Week

In this age of fiberglass, I am searching for a gem.

Health Tip

Spring is the best time for asparagus and they are one of the best veggie sources of folate, a B vitamin that could help keep you out of a slump, which is crucial to keep you in a good mood.

Environmental Tips

Move your refrigerator from the wall and vacuum its condenser coils each year. This will help the refrigerator run more efficiently.
