Plein Air Shorewood Next Weekend!

Get ready for Plein Air Shorewood when our Village becomes a thriving artists' colony for three full days: Thursday, Friday and Saturday, September 19, 20 and 21. Fifty-three professional artists will be painting outdoors throughout the community as they capture our handsome parks, lakefront, river, business district and private homes in original scenes.

Watch the artists in action up close and personal for three days and then meet them during special, after-hours social settings open to the community. (Visit pleinairshorewood.com for all the details.) Plein Air Shorewood will culminate with a Gala Reception/Auction on Saturday night from 6-10 pm. at the Shorewood Public Libraray, 3920 N. Murray Ave. when more than 150 paintings are auctioned off during this community arts celebration! The Gala is free and open to the public. Meet your friends and neighbors and gather to celebrate the arts in Shorewood.

Plein Air Shorewood is presented by the Village of Shorewood Public Art Program with major sponsorship from the Shorewood Foundation. Many thanks to all the event/corporate and individual sponsors and private donors that have helped to underwrite this exciting arts event. Special thanks to the Public Art Committee and Plein Air Co-Chairs Dick Eschner, Patricia Algiers, Don Berg and Jenny Heyden for their tireless work over the past 6 months preparing for Plein Air Shorewood. Petition for Direct Legislation

On August 26, 2013 a Petition for Direct Legislation was provided to the Clerk's office.  The Village Clerk completed the certification process and deemed the petition sufficient in regard to the number of electors signatures required; and the petition itself and proposed resolution are sufficient as to proper form.  The petition will be forwarded to the Village Board for action at the regular Village Board meeting to be held on Monday, October 7, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. in the Court Room of the Village Hall, 3930 N Murray Avenue.

The petition requests that the Village of Shorewood hold a referendum asking residents whether they would support a constitutional amendment to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling, which states corporations have the same constitutional rights as people and can freely donate to campaigns.

Shorewood Library Fall Programming

The Shorewood Library's fall programs are ready to roll out. Here's a look at what's happening:

  • Pre-School Storytime starts up in September for a new crew of 3 and 4 year olds. Register beginning on Monday, September 9, with storytimes running on Thursdays staring September 28.
  • Once a month from September through December we'll offer an evening of family fun with Craft Nights. Bring the whole family from young to old.
  • The youngest tots may also have fun at Pop in and Play (for children 6 months to 3 years of age) where they will build critical early literacy skills through stories, games and free play.
  • School-age kids are invited to leave their parents at home and head to Camp Half-Blood on September 25. It will be a Percy Jackson action-packed afternoon of trivia, games and more - all about Rick Riordan's awesome series.
  • Teens 13+ are invited to Library Late Nights, October through December. At Late Nights, the after-hours library will be a teen-only quiet study space or loud game-playing space, while we make stuff or watch movies.

Back to school is a busy time, so let the Library make it easier for you: program information is not only listed here, but also on flyers for you to take home, and on the Library's Facebook and Twitter pages.

Quotes of the Week
The battles that count aren't the ones for gold medals. The struggles within yourself - the invisible, inevitable battles inside all of us - that's where it's at.
Jesse Owens

Health Tip

You know your heart benefits from exercise. Your brain does, too. Studies show that regular, moderate exercise -- 30 minutes of walking or a light one-mile run -- helps fight the effects of aging on the brain.
Environmental Tips

Solar heat is the best kind of heat: free. In the summer, it's best to close the drapes during the day, to prevent heat from coming in, and then open them at night to allow the heat to escape. In the fall and winter, reverse that: Keep them open to let heat in during the day, and then close them at night to prevent it from escaping.
