Petition for Direct Legislation

On August 26, 2013 a Petition for Direct Legislation was provided to the Clerk's Office.  The Clerk's Office is in the process of reviewing the Petition for completeness and anticipates certification to be completed either Monday, September 9 or Tuesday, September 10.  Additional information, including when this item will be presented to the Village Board, will be provided in the next edition of the Manager's Weekly Memo.

The petition requests that the Village of Shorewood hold a referendum asking residents whether they would support a constitutional amendment to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling, which states corporations have the same constitutional rights as people and can freely donate to campaigns.

The Resident Survey is Coming Soon!

In the coming weeks, you will receive a postcard in the mail inviting you to take an online survey. The purpose of this important survey is to provide the Shorewood Village Board with your perceptions and opinions about services, and current and future initiatives.  Your answers will help direct Village officials as they establish policies for the type and level of services to be provided.  Your input as a resident of Shorewood will serve as an important guide for the Village Board as it plans to meet the needs of Shorewood residents - now and in the future.

The Village of Shorewood is working with the Center for Urban Initiatives and Research (CUIR) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for the administration of this survey.  CUIR has extensive experience working with area communities in survey research, focus groups, and planning.

Keep an eye out for your survey invitation card!

Choosing a Contractor

Deciding on a contractor for home improvement projects can often times be overwhelming. When looking for a contractor there are a number of helpful sites that can help you make an educated choice.

All contractors working on one or two family residential homes are required to be licensed through the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services. Below is a list of sites to better help you in your search for that right contractor.

The Planning and Development Department has an internal "Contractor Stop List" that can also be inquired about at any time by calling (414) 847-2640.

  • Pre-School Storytime starts up in September for a new crew of 3 and 4 year olds. Register beginning on Monday, September 9, with storytimes running on Thursdays staring September 28.
  • Once a month from September through December we'll offer an evening of family fun with Craft Nights. Bring the whole family from young to old.
  • The youngest tots may also have fun at Pop in and Play (for children 6 months to 3 years of age) where they will build critical early literacy skills through stories, games and free play.
  • School-age kids are invited to leave their parents at home and head to Camp Half-Blood on September 25. It will be a Percy Jackson action-packed afternoon of trivia, games and more - all about Rick Riordan's awesome series.
  • Teens 13+ are invited to Library Late Nights, October through December. At Late Nights, the after-hours library will be a teen-only quiet study space or loud game-playing space, while we make stuff or watch movies.

Back to school is a busy time, so let the Library make it easier for you: program information is not only listed here, but also on flyers for you to take home, and on the Library's Facebook and Twitter pages.

Song of the Month

Recently retired public health nurse Kathleen Demien, chose a fitting song on the eve of her  retirement, "Leaving on a Jet Plane" by Peter, Paul and Mary.

She said that she choose this song because it reminded her of when her boyfriend (now husband) left for the Vietnam War. For her, the song represented about all of what they both felt and experienced.
Quotes of the Week

Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.

Henry Ford

Health Tip

Fall can be a treat for the senses: the crisp air, apple picking, pumpkin carving, a gorgeous canopy of fall foliage, and the crunch of leaves underfoot. These months are a great time to exercise outdoors and enjoy cooler temperatures.
Environmental Tips

Before packing away those summer clothes, go through them and determine which items to keep, which items to repurpose into something else (cleaning rags, craft projects, etc.) and which to donate.
