Public Works

Special Collection Reminder

Please help the Public Works Department (DPW) keep the Village looking tidy.  Before placing large refuse items  on the parkway, residents should be aware they are required  to pay for a special collection at the DPW at 3801 N Morris Blvd or at the Village Hall at 3930 N Murray Ave.  Special Collections are picked up on Thursdays for a fee of $50 for  500 pounds and 15 minutes of labor.  Items left on the parkway over three days may be picked up by crews at the DPW for double fees billed to the property owner.  If you are hiring a third party to haul your bulky items away, please remember to call DPW to avoid unnecessary fees.  For more information go to www.villageofshorewood.org and click the DPW link.

Library Website Redesign

The website has been evaluated and we are in the process of a complete redesign with valuable content, easy access to library services, and regular recommendation and news from library staff.  The Library is working with Byte Studios in Milwaukee and we are excited about the progress we have made.  Keep in mind that many of the services your library provides is available 24/7.  Can't sleep at night and feel like brushing up on your French?  Go to Mango Languages and have a conversation.  Just cleaned up the dishes and wondering what to make for tomorrow's dinner?  Go to Rachel Ray's magazine on Zinio; no cost to you for the full color issue.  Your Shorewood Library card is a great value and we are working to make it easier for you to find and use our services.  The current (not great) site is at www.shorewoodlibrary.org.  Take a look so you can fully appreciate the improvements we have planned!

Summer Sounds Concert Series Ends August 14:
Don't Miss Mood Swing Orchestra

The popular Summer Sounds concert series at Hubbard Park closes out the season on Wednesday, August 14, with the Big Band sounds of Mood Swing Orchestra. Enjoy the sound, look and mood of the '30s and '40s big bands with this 19-piece ensemble including two female vocalists. Get ready for a dazzling evening (swing dancers to follow and add to the fun!).

The park opens at 5 p.m. and music starts at 6 p.m. Bring a lawn chair or blanket - there is limited picnic table seating. Food and beverages for sale from Hubbard Park Lodge.

Summer Sounds is presented by the Village of Shorewood Marketing Program. Many thanks to our sponsors for making this year's concert series another huge success: Hubbard Park Lodge, Shorewood Foundation, Shorewood Men's Club, Stevens Point Brewery, PNC Bank and Culver's of Shorewood.

Enjoy a wonderful summer evening under the stars at beautiful Hubbard Park along the Milwaukee River. The park is handicapped-accessible at the lower level turnaround.

Junior Plein Air  at the Village Center

On Thursday, August 15 at 2:30 p.m., artist Don Berg will create a few caricatures of participants and demonstrate the technique of painting outdoors. Then, kids will have a chance to create their own outdoor art. If the weather doesn't cooperate, we will take advantage of the library's many large windows and create art based on the view from inside.

When Plein Air Shorewood rolls around in September, kids who attend this unique art program will be able to tell their family and friends exactly what it takes to paint outdoors!

Children under 6 must be accompanied by an older sibling or adult.

Health Tip

Homemade freezer pops are an easy, fun treat for kids to make. Mash up fruit like peaches, grapes, berries or watermelon and put them in paper cups, insert a popsicle stick, freeze overnight and enjoy!
Environmental Tips

When your home is at its hottest, remember that the basement is the coolest place in the house. You can save on energy by heading down there, when it gets too hot.
