Shorewood Seeks Artists and Sponsors for Plein Air Festival

Shorewood's Public Art Committee is pleased to announce its first annual plein air festival, "Plein Air Shorewood," on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, September 19-21. This exciting, interactive event will feature 50 professional artists who will paint outdoors throughout the Shorewood community. Paintings created during this 3-day weekend will then be offered for sale at a Saturday night reception and auction at the Village Center/Shorewood Public Library. The event coincides with the third anniversary of the installation of Shorewood's Plensa sculpture, "Spillover II," at Atwater Park.

"Plein Air Shorewood" is open to any professional painter - and Shorewood artists in particular are encouraged to participate. An application can be downloaded at pleinairshorewood.com with a due date of July 15.

In addition, the Public Art Committee is seeking sponsors for the event. A variety of sponsorship packages are offered, including underwriting for artists' receptions and awards, musical entertainment and the end-of-event gala. Volunteers are also being solicited to help during the event weekend.

"Plein air" means "painting outside." Shorewood is fortunate to offer an extensive selection of outdoor venues to paint - from private homes to businesses to our handsome parks and lakefront. The State of Wisconsin is the leader with the most number of plein air events taking place each year, and Shorewood proudly joins the ranks of other plein art events held statewide.

Plein Air Shorewood is presented by the Shorewood Public Art Committee and sponsored by the Shorewood Foundation and the Shorewood Woman's Club. Additional support is being provided by a variety of community organizations and groups.

Keep Yourself Safe from Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes can be more than a summer annoyance.  Mosquito larvae were found in catch basins that were checked in the North Shore areas.  The species that can carry West Nile Virus (culex) was identified.  The best way to prevent West Nile Virus and other mosquito-borne infections is by protecting yourself and eliminating standing water.  Even a small amount of water left in any type of outdoor container, such as children's toys or gardening pots can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes.  Protect yourself by staying indoors when mosquitoes are most active (early morning and at dusk) and by using a repellant when outdoors.  Read labels carefully for safe application. Use this link for more information: http://www.cdc.gov/westnile/index.html

Watch your Ash!

Our cool, wet spring weather has provided perfect conditions for ash anthracnose, a fungus that causes cosmetic damage to ash leaves.  Heavily-infected trees drop their leaves, but this is unlikely to cause tree mortality or long-term problems. Trees should refoliate within a few weeks.  Fallen leaves should be raked and removed to prevent the spread of the spores that cause anthracnose infections.  More information can be found at UW Extension web site http://hort.uwex.edu/articles/anthracnose

Quote of the Week

Our greatest happiness does not depend on the condition of life in which chance has placed us, but is always the result of a good conscience, good health, occupation, and freedom in all just pursuits.

Thomas Jefferson

Health Tip

If your having a sumemr picnic remember the two-hour/one-hour rule. Don't let food sit out for more than two hours or one hour if it's a hot day over 90 degrees.
Environmental Tips

If you love to grill during the summer, propane burns much cleaner than either wood or charcoal briquettes. If you can't resist charcoal, try a natural product that burn much cleaner than your traditional briquettes.
