Men's Club Chicken BBQ

For the last 42 years, the Shorewood Men's Club has held their Chicken BBQ on the second Saturday in June (June 8 this year). It is one of the summer's first events and helps kick-off the many summer activities Shorewood has to offer. All money raised at the BBQ goes back to the community in the form of grants and scholarships.

The Shorewood Men's Club, a civic group founded in 1956 is a strong supporter and popular group in the Village of Shorewood. The group was originally founded as a way for men to meet, get to know neighbors and a way to give back to the community. Please support the Shorewood Men's Club by attending their Annual Chicken BBQ at Atwater Park on Saturday, June 8 from 11:30am to 7:30pm. For the first time this year there will be a limited number of half slabs of rib dinners for $12! There will be chicken, ice cream and music all day. Good food, good music and good friends - a great way to enjoy your day. For more information visit www.shorewoodmensclub.org/chicken_bbq.htm

Shorewood Seeks Artists for Plein Air Festival

Shorewood's Public Art Committee is pleased to announce its first annual plein air festival, "Plein Art Shorewood," on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, September 19-21. This exciting, interactive event will feature 50 professional artists who will paint outdoors throughout the Shorewood community. Paintings created during this 3-day weekend will then be offered for sale at a Saturday night reception and auction at the Village Center/Shorewood Public Library. The event coincides with the third anniversary of the installation of Shorewood's Plensa sculpture, "Spillover II," at Atwater Park.

"Plein Air Shorewood" is open to any professional painter - and Shorewood artists in particular are encouraged to participate. An application can be downloaded at pleinairshorewood.com with a due date of July 15.

In addition, the Public Art Committee is seeking sponsors for the event. A variety of sponsorship packages are offered, including underwriting for artists' receptions and awards, musical entertainment and the end-of-event gala. Volunteers are also being solicited to help during the event weekend.

"Plein air" means "painting outside." Shorewood is fortunate to offer an extensive selection of outdoor venues to paint - from private homes to businesses to our handsome parks and lakefront. The State of Wisconsin is the leader with the most number of plein art events taking place each year, and Shorewood proudly joins the ranks of other plein art events held statewide.

Plein Air Shorewood is presented by the Shorewood Public Art Committee and sponsored by the Shorewood Foundation and the Shorewood Woman's Club. Additional support is being provided by a variety of community organizations and groups.

Milwaukee County CDBG Hearing

The County of Milwaukee is inviting citizen comments on the proposed Community Development Block Grant funding for 2014. Milwaukee County will be receiving 2014 federal CDBG/HOME funding totaling approximately $2,030,000. The CDBG/HOME funding is to be shared between Milwaukee County and 16 participating municipalities. It is proposed that the County's share be used for countywide projects. Approximately 20% is set aside for administrative costs. The Economic and Community Development Committee is holding a public hearing on Monday, June 10, 2013 at 9:00AM, in Rm. 201B of the Milwaukee County Courthouse, 901 N. 9th Street, Milwaukee, to obtain the views of the county citizens on the general needs of CDBG/HOME funds.  Non-profit agencies are eligible to apply for these grants. Help the Community and Help the Environment

The Shorewood Men's Club gave a grant to the Shorewood Conversation Committee to help make the 42nd Annual Chicken BBQ a little greener!  This grant enables the Conservation Committee to provide a paper plate alternative.  Those dining at the park will get to choose "paper or polystyrene" for their meal.  We encourage you to enjoy your dinner and help the environment at the same time by choosing paper if you are dining "in"! Also remember to look for the recycling bins for your glass, plastic and aluminum drink containers.

Quote of the Week

Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.
Helen Keller

Health Tip

Parents have a lot of things to learn about child safety, but learning CPR should be near the top of the list. It will give you tremendous peace of mind - and the more peace of mind you have as a parent, the better.
Environmental Tips
You may not know this, but your dishwasher uses less water than washing by hand. Then let dishes air-dry to conserve even more energy.
