Fall Clean-Up

Fall color is all around us and it is time to "Fall back an hour" starting November 1st. Let us not forget Fall means shorter days with less sun, less plant growth, and ultimately less water. Along with adjusting our irrigation clocks to "Fall back" to minimize our water consumption, it is important to also take care of these Fall clean-up practices.

  • Rake those leaves. Leaving a few will help insulate plants and provide valuable nutrients as they decompose.
  • Feed the grass. Fertilizing in the fall allows the grass to soak up nutrients to build a healthy, rejuvenated lawn.
  • Weed all about it. Weeding will ensure a healthy bed for Spring planting.

    Spotlight: Roth Estate Winery

We are excited to announce the opening and completion of the Roth Estate Winery earlier this year. Roth Estate Winery is located in the Russian River Valley just outside of Windsor and south of downtown Healdsburg. We had the opportunity to rennovate Chalk Hill Winery in 2012 leading to our rennovation work at Lancaster Winery in 2013 and Foley Johnson Winery in 2014. Each of these wineries, including Roth Estate Winery, are part of the Foley Family Wineries founded by vintner Bill Foley.

Their new grounds were designed by landscape architect Don MacNair and Nordby Construction was the general contractor for the project. The site is home to a low water plant palette complete with native no mow grasses and drought tolerant perennials and shrubs. Outdoor picnic areas and low seat walls create an inviting space for visitors to the winery. Hope you check it out!

    Perfect Time for Bulbs

If you want to welcome spring with a burst of color, planning ahead is key. Our Mediterranean climate makes Sonoma County an ideal location for bulbs to thrive. Bulbs prefer rich soil, good drainage, and full sun.

Here in Sonoma County we are also fortunate to not need to refrigerate bulbs before planting. The key to planting is to place bulbs a depth of about twice their height with added bone meal or bulb food. Our favorites include Freesia, Ixia, Sparaxis, Tulips, and Daffodils pictured to the left.
