The San Diego World Trade Center held its MetroConnect Grand Prize Pitchfest on November 16th, providing an opportunity for a select group of companies from its MetroConnect export assistance program to compete for a $35,000 grand prize. Out of the 15 companies in this year's MetroConnect cohort, five finalists were invited to the pitchfest to compete for the grand prize. Those finalists included Deering Banjo Company, MANTA Instruments, Rough Draft Brewing, Calbiotech, and VaultRMS. Representatives from each company were given an opportunity to present their business and international expansion plans, while the audience of almost 200 community and business leaders voted for a winner. Each company gave a compelling pitch, but in the end, Rough Draft Brewing - a local craft beer brewer - was voted the winner and took home the $35,000 grand prize. Rough Draft, which is also a client of the San Diego CITD, will be using the prize money to help expand its exports into Latin America.
Grossmont High School Students Learn About Careers in Global Trade & Logistics at Career Fair

On November 9th, Grossmont High School held its 3rd Annual Career Fair at its campus in East County. The fair provides the school's senior students with an opportunity to explore various career paths and speak with professionals with experience in those fields.  The organizers who oversee and coordinate the event have invited the San Diego CITD for the past 2 years to be a part of the fair.

The 2016 edition included the participation of more companies and Government entities than the previous year. Approximately 500 students participated in the fair. The fair ran for the 6 periods of the school day to give time for all students to stop by and learn about different occupations and careers.

APICS is a national industry-recognized association for supply management professionals.

The CPIM program empowers professionals with the ability to understand and evaluate production and inventory activities within a company's global operations. To earn the CPIM designation, a professional must pass a series of five exams to demonstrate mastery of essential terminology, concepts, and strategies related to production and inventory management. The CITD/DSN will be offering APICS courses designed to prepare professionals for each of the certification exams. The instructor-led courses are 8 - 10 weeks long, with one 3-hour session per week.

According to APICS's Operations Management Employment Outlook, professionals with the CPIM designation see a significantly improved hiring potential and an average 14% salary increase.

LINCS is a national supply chain management education and certification program funded by a $24.5 million U.S. Department of Labor TAACCCT grant.

The LINCS program offers eight different certification tracks, including: Supply Chain Management Principles, Warehousing Operations, Transportation Operations, Customer Service Operations, Demand Planning, Manufacturing and Service Operations, Inventory Management, and Supply Management and Procurement. Participants can complete one track, or all eight, depending on their individual educational and career goals. All courses are available through a self-paced online learning system and enrollment in the program is currently available at no cost to participants.

After completing a course, participants may sit for a SCPro Fundamentals certification offered and certified by CSCMP. Upon passing the exam, the participant receives a certification in the particular skill sets tested by that certification exam, making them more competitive in obtaining and sustaining employment.
