San Diego CITD Update
December 2015
In This Edition

More than 150 students, faculty, and professionals from the international business community were in attendance at an event hosted by the Southwestern College Business Club and the San Diego CITD and supported by the Deputy Sector Navigator of Global Trade and Logistics at the college's campus in Chula Vista. The workshop was designed to provide students with a glimpse of various career paths available in international business, as well as insight on the education, knowledge, and skills it takes to be successful in this field. The workshop was directed to students interested in pursuing trade-related careers and to transfer students interested in many business related fields. It also intended to give students a live career pathway and a time line provided by the professionals invited, as well as the valuable message offered by the university student mentors to college students on how to successfully transfer and complete their education at a 4-year university.

On November 12, 2015 the Bay Area CITD kicked off a 3-day conference in San Francisco that highlighted the convergence of global trade and logistics with cybersecurity. The goal of the "Intergrating Global Trade & Logistics and Cybersecurity" conference was to provide insight to participants on how academic models bridge skills gaps between education and training and how to tap into available resources, used by industry leaders, that strategically protect all aspects of integrated global supply chains.

The conference featured plenary sessions with keynote and panel presentations by leaders from companies and organizations in the global trade & logistics, security, and technology spaces, including Resilinc Inc., Expeditors, Juniper Networks, NextLabs, Facebook, California Highway Patrol, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, among others. After the plenary sessions, attendees had the opportunity to participate in breakout sessions along two tracks: Global Trade & Logistics and Cybersecurity. In one of those breakout sessions, titled "Bridging Skills Gaps Between Training and Education", Irina Weisblat-an instructor in Southwestern College’s International Logistics and Transportation Program-discussed how academia addresses differences in educators' and employers' perspectives of which skills make graduates competitive in the new economy, and which skills colleges should teach to fit the needs of the rapidly evolving global economy.

The Orange County Business Council (OCBC) recently announced its 2015 'Turning Red Tape into Red Carpet' Award winners. The awards program recognizes leaders, policies and programs in local government eliminating barriers to economic growth and private sector jobs creation. The Orange County CITD, under the leadership of our friend and colleague, Lynn Stewart, was presented with the award for its significant work on responding to the business expansion and workforce development needs of the international trade industry.

The University of Queensland in Australia and the Centers for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) at The University of Connecticut and San Diego State University in the US are offering a unique opportunity for academics and business leaders to explore how some of Australia's leading organisations are applying sustainable business practices.

In two fast, thought-provoking weeks participants will:
  • Visit business and government agencies in Sydney and Brisbane to meet with industry experts to see and hear firsthand how real-world organisations are planning for and meeting the sustainability challenge.
  • Explore how climate change is impacting on all areas of business management and learn more about the role new technology, energy resources and the carbon economy will play in a changing business landscape.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of how some of Australia's leading academics and researchers are helping to tackle the sustainability challenges of tomorrow.

The Western U.S. Agricultural Trade Association (WUSATAź), and the New Mexico and California Departments of Agriculture, announce participation and registration in the following activity:

Europe Dried Fruit and Nut Inbound Mission - (December 7-11, 2015)
New Mexico - December 7-9, 2015
California - December 9-11, 2015

Operating as a single market with 28 countries and roughly 330 million people, the EU is a major world trading power. The combined economies of EU countries was $13.9 trillion USD in 2014 (Gross Domestic Product), roughly equivalent to the size of the U.S. economy. Trade was hit by the global recession, but the EU remains the world's largest importer accounting for roughly 17% of global imports. The EU is a net importer of most dried fruit and nuts. The market for these products is sustained by the thriving bakery, breakfast cereal, snack and natural product industries in the EU.
