Southwestern College Higher Education Center at Otay Mesa Named Service Provider of the Year
Southwestern College's Higher Education Center at Otay Mesa (HECOM) has been named "Service Provider of the Year" by the Otay Mesa Chamber of Commerce. The HECOM was selected for this recognition for its commitment to the students and businesses of the community. In addition to its well regarded academic programs, which include the Nursing Program and Police Academy, the HECOM supports small businesses in the region through its Center for International Trade Development (CITD). The CITD works closely with the Otay Mesa Chamber of Commerce and its members, providing a variety of programs and services to help area businesses expand through international trade.
The HECOM was presented with its award by San Diego City Councilmember, David Alvarez, at the Otay Mesa Chamber of Commerce 26th Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony on November 22nd at the San Diego Country Club. Silvia Cornejo, Dean of the HECOM, and Tim Nader, Southwestern College Governing Board Member, were on hand to accept the award.

CITD Co-hosts Seminar for San Diego Manufacturers

The San Diego Center for International Trade Development (CITD) and the National City Chamber of Commerce co-hosted a seminar for area manufacturers titled "International Opportunities and Resources for San Diego Manufacturers". The purpose of the seminar was to provide information on various resources available to local manufacturers and opportunities for exporting their products and services.
After opening remarks by Jacqueline Reynoso, CEO of the National City Chamber of Commerce, Brad Raulston, Director of Community Development for the City of National City, and Sid Voorakkara, Senior Business Development Specialist with the State of California's Office of Business and Economic Development, representatives from various trade, economic, and workforce development organizations from both San Diego and Baja California presented on business opportunities in Mexico and overseas, permitting requirements, tools and resources to improve productivity and profitability, as well as manufacturing training and workforce development programs.

How to Help Typhoon Haiyan Victims

Two weeks after Typhoon Haiyan devastated portions of the central and eastern Philippines, much aid is still needed.
According to some estimates by the U.N., as many as 2.5 million people are still in need of food aid in the regions hardest hit by the typhoon. Medical and other supplies and services are needed as well. You can help with relief efforts by making a donation. Any amount helps. Here are some organizations that are helping with relief efforts:
