Family Notes

Notes From the Top
Dear Families,

This week has been an exercise in flexibility: state testing has forced us all to shift our schedules in significant ways. In some cases, our teachers haven't had half as much time as they need with their students; occasionally, teachers have had no time. And our But the importance of tests like PARCC and MCAS cannot be understated, and we are happy to participate in these programs because they support us, even if the process of participation is difficult.

Through it all, we persevere. We make room for our obligations, and we celebrate the progress we're making. And we ensure that the truly important things don't get left behind. In the midst of upturned scheduling, our El Sistema staff is preparing our students for the approaching El Sistema Showcase, when we will meet and learn with the other El Sistema programs in our city. In the last weeks of school, our teachers are bringing lively new projects to our students, to keep them interested up until the very end. I am so excited to see their end results!

And soon will be the grand finale: our June Concert Series, starting with our kindergarteners and ending with our 8th grade graduation, will be an event to remember. I know that every single person in our community is looking forward to it.

In the past couple weeks, we've reached out to you about the changes for next year. We encourage you to keep up the conversation. Please join us at the El Sistema Showcase, PAC meetings, and our June Concerts. Help us to persevere, as we really couldn't do it without you. Help us finish this year strong!

Diana Lam

Parents, Take Note!
  • An Important Note from the School Nurse
    Dear Parents,

Please be advised, the allergy season is now upon us. Conservatory Lab does not have any allergy medication on hand to be administered. Please administer the appropriate medication at home for your child to aide them through their (sneezing, coughing, runny nose, itchy eyes, itching throat) allergy relief in school.
    Thank you very much!!

  • PARCC testing is will continue next week. Thank you SO MUCH to all parents for helping us make this process as smooth as possible!
Testing will be from May 16 to May 20 for grades 6-8. Testing will begin each morning at 7:30.

As explained by PARCC, the test "is to provide high quality assessments that will allow parents and educators to see how a child is progressing in school and whether they are on track for postsecondary success". This testing is extremely important, and it is imperative we all follow the test's rules for the duration of the testing period.

From May 16 to May 20, NO VISITORS, INCLUDING PARENTS, are allowed in the school building after 7:30 AM. This rule will be enforced, as it is the law! If you have any questions, please email Elise Mostello at emostello@conservatorylab.org

  •  Dear Families,
This year we will have an end of the year social gathering for all families, staff and board members at the Boston Nature Center, 500 Walk Hill Road, Mattapan on Thursday, June 2nd from 5 - 7 PM. The event will be an opportunity to share our culture - both our school culture and our social and ethnic cultures by sharing a potluck meal and some fun activities. All students have received a flyer for the event and I have attached one here as well. RSVPs are NOT required but will be appreciated so we can plan the handouts.

Two of the activities will be chances to "share our expertise".
    1. We would love to have parent volunteers lead a cultural activity such as a dance lesson or a craft activity. If you are interested in leading such an activity, please get in touch with me in the next couple of weeks so I can plan for materials.

    2. We will have a table of information about our expeditions and forms for families to use to say how they would like to volunteer as an expert in the future. Are you a chef? Our K2 students next year could use your help planning a cooking project. Are you a construction worker? Our 1st graders learn all about building and would love a guest speaker! Do you like to chaperone for cultural events? Make sure you are on the list so we know who to call.

We are hoping for a super fun family event on June 2nd where everyone has a chance to eat and mingle and share recipes and stories. Please join us!
