Family Notes
March 11, 2016
Notes From the Top
Dear Families,

One of the most delightful sounds to my ears is that of a steady hum of engaged conversation and activity that I hear as I walk thru the school halls.

It is the sound of learning together and working together towards a shared goal. Cooperative learning goes hand in hand with social and emotional learning.  When students are working together they learn to recognize the feelings and interests, strengths and weaknesses, similarities and differences of others.  These group interactions have students learn how to maintain positive relationships with others and how to manage their own feeling and behavior in order to achieve important personal and academic goals.

This kind of cooperative learning produces an increase in student engagement and active participation in the learning process, which in turn increases student motivation, time on task and retention of information. In short, learning together can help students to learn more.  Emotionally positive relations with peers can promote student motivation and thus increase their enjoyment of the learning process. This kind of learning is not confined to the students alone but can involve their teachers and family members as well. As all share positive experiences and feelings connected to discovering something new together, the relatedness of it contributes to the love of learning.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Diana Lam

  • Dear Parents of Conservatory Lab,

Saturday, April 9th is the day for Conservatory Lab's 6th Annual Spring Fling! No Place Like Home Celebration! This annual parent-sponsored event has been a huge success each of the five previous years that it has taken place.  It is a concert that brings all Conservatory Lab families together on a weekend and demonstrates the amazing energy and power that parents, children and school staff have as they work together. It is a joyous event open to the school community and to the public.

This year's event will be a little different than other years. As our numbers have grown, it has been increasingly difficult to feature all our students in the same concert in the way which we were able to do in previous years when our student body was smaller. For the 6th Annual Spring Fling! we have selected a one show format that will have two acts with an intermission, and a total running time of about 2 hours.

This year the Spring Fling Steering Committee along with members of the El Sistema faculty, decided to try a program format that will feature selected students from every grade to convey an overview of what our students do throughout the school year, much like All School Assemblies.  As many of you remember the Assemblies were exciting and fun. All children, staff and families enjoyed each other's company while watching and cheering on their fellow students who were performing. The program format that we are working on promises an enjoyable concert.

Although not every student will play in this concert, there will be good representation from every grade included in the performance. All K-1, K-2, and 1st grade students will perform. The Bernstein Orchestra, 2nd and 3rd grade wind ensemble, the Dudamel Orchestra and several other small ensembles will perform. Please be alert to receiving a participation slip for your student to be onstage and return it as soon as possible. These slips will be going out the early part of next week.

One of the most outstanding Spring Fling! memories was the Finale in April 2014 when ALL the students, onstage and in the audience at The Strand Theatre, sang "Lean on Me" and there was not a dry eye in the house. We hope to have another rousing Finale this year. The goal is to have every Conservatory Lab student in attendance at the Spring Fling! concert participate in another rousing Finale.
We ask that ALL parents support the school by buying tickets for the show and attending as an enthusiastic audience. Got o EventBrite  bit.ly/springfling_2016.  All students of CLCS are free. Invite all families, friends and neighbors to attend.  We desire your support. We value your community spirit because in these long transitional times we still have each other. These Spring Fling! Concerts are memorable.  Join us and make your own memories.

    Sincerely,
Ramika Smith and Sandy Yeung, Co-Chairs Spring Fling! Steering Committee

An Update on Dismissal Procedures on the Dorchester Campus
Dear Families,

Conservatory Lab often reviews practices and protocols to ensure we are maximizing instructional time and providing appropriate supervision of our students at the beginning and end of the day. As a result of recent conversation among staff members and a review of the policies we shared in August, we have decided to make slight changes to our dismissal procedures.

Please carefully review this information and email me with any questions and concerns.  It is critical to the smooth operation of dismissal that families are knowledgeable about these procedures. We appreciate your support.

Regards,
Robyn

Dismissal Procedures

  1. Dismissal will begin at 3:40pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Dismissal will begin at 11:40am on Wednesday.

3:40pm - Students who walk home or take public transportation will be dismissed.

3:40pm - Students picked up by parents will be dismissed to parent pick-up room. Staff members on duty outside will notify supervising staff in the parent pick-up room to send your child outside.

3:42pm - Students taking the bus will be dismissed to bus room.

3:45pm - Buses are called to the front of the school in the order that they arrive at 3:45pm.

  1. When picking up your child, you have two options for parking:

There is a large lot up the hill, behind the school. You may park in that lot and walk down to pick up your child.

You may park on Dorchester Avenue, walk up to the side entrance (next to ambulance driveway) of the school. There are many 2-hour parking spaces.

Do not park in Bus Lane (front of school).

Do not park in the lot in front of Carney Hospital.  That lot is reserved for Carney patients and their visitors.
  1. When picking up your child, you may remain in your car.

You can drive to the parking lot in the back, make a loop back around and drive down to pull up in front of the school.

Parents arriving early may wait in their cars in front of the school NO more than 5 minutes.

Parents may not leave their cars unattended.

Do not make a U-turn in front of the ambulance driveway or block the ambulance driveway. This causes congestion and endangers other drivers. At all times, the ambulance needs to be able to enter or exit the driveway in case of emergency.
