Family Notes
February 12, 2016
Notes From the Top
Dear Families,

After an intensive few weeks of intensive engagement in school projects, we now begin the February "break" away from the usual day-to-day. This time is a wonderful opportunity to practice one of the key principles of Expeditionary Learning - that of reflection.

It is beneficial to everyone to take time to be alone and to explore one's own thoughts, to make sense of what surrounds us in our daily life and maybe come up with new ideas of what we want to do, how we want to do it, make new resolutions and explore new horizons.

We are told that reflection leads to growth of the individual.
Taking time to reflect can help us to better understand our strengths and weaknesses, face our fears,  identify areas of weakness, ways to improve  and acknowledge what is most important to us.

Being reflective can lead us to greater self-awareness, which is a first step to positive change.

Best Wishes for an exciting, happy "break" with time to reflect.

Diana LamWarm regards,
Diana Lam

Parents, Take Note!
  • AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE ABOUT CONJUNCTIVITIS

Nurse Lawrence wants to alert all families that this week, she has had to send three students home because they contracted conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye. If you notice your child's eyes reddening, tearing up, and/or itching more than usual, they may have pink eye, and should be taken to the doctor! If you have any questions over the break about your child's symptoms, feel free to contact Nurse Lawrence at rlawrence@conservatorylab.org

  • School Calendar Change Alert!
The date for the 8th grade Celebration has been moved from the Tuesday the 21st of June to Monday the 20th. The 8th grade Celebration and June Concert III will be a combined event held at Roxbury Community College. Exact times and other details will be determined shortly.

  • Update on Spring Fling! 2016
The process of producing Spring Fling! is a great endeavor every year. The parent steering committee for the event, this year co-chaired by Ramika Smith and Sandy Yeung, has taken off at a terrific pace reaching out to secure sponsors for the event.  They are recruiting all interested parent to reach out to their local businesses with whom they interact regularly - the dry cleaners, dentist, banker, garage or mechanic, etc. - to give their support to the event. Please see sample letters attached for your use.

Another source of revenue for the event, which also demonstrates the creativity and school spirit of each class is the class basket that is to be raffled off at the event. Each class in the school selects a theme for their basket - Spa, sports, culinary, electronics, fantasy, garden, etc. - and then every family in that class contributes an item to enhance that basket.  These are raffled off - 3 tickets for $5 or a book of 25 tickets for 20 dollars.  The contest for which is the most creative basket and how much interest it generates is fun and full of spirit! Contact your class teacher to learn what your child's class theme is.
