Dear Families,
With the arrival of these long-awaited spring days, many of us are engaging in more exercise and outdoor activities. It brings to mind how important health and wellness are to the quality of life for every single one of us.
Basic things are important: such as the kind and quality of food we have every single day, at every single meal; the amount of water we drink; the amount of walking, running, jumping and, soon, swimming we do every day; the amount of sleep we get every night and also of special note, the time we give ourselves to not be "stressed out". We must take time to breathe, to pause, to reflect.
And perhaps, most importantly, find a time to smile, to laugh even. Remember the old adage "laughter is the best medicine"! Humor and laughter strengthen your immune system, boost your energy, diminish pain, and protect you from the damaging effects of stress.
Best wishes for a healthy and happy week end.
Warmly,
Diana Lam

K2 Teaches Cookie Monster How to Eat Healthy
Since November, the K2 classrooms have been hard at work on their healthy eating expedition. It all started when Cookie Monster visited the school with only cookies in his lunchbox. It was then the students' jobs to convince Cookie Monster to eat a more balanced meal. In order to do so, they had to learn all about nutrition and healthy eating!
The K2ers did a lot of research on healthy eating. They learned about MyPlate (the new food pyramid) and how to create a balanced meal. Once they had finished their research, it was their job to create a "Pick Me" poster, in which students chose five foods from the five food groups to represent a balanced meal. They also learned about exercise and staying active. They became experts on living a healthy lifestyle!
On Wednesday night, both K2s and their families gathered together for an expedition celebration. We had almost 100% turnout from families and it was a fun filled night! The celebration kicked off with a performance of the MyPlate song (to the tune of Meghan Trainor's All About That Bass), written by the amazing Dave Cordes and Tess Plotkin. After the performance, parents were invited to the classrooms to go on a gallery walk of all the "Pick Me" posters the students created. Lastly, most families brought food for a fantastic potluck. It was a terrific celebration of both knowledge learned and a community truly coming together to create a special night! Special shoutout from K-2 parent Jenny Rosario, thanking Ms. Biro for getting the song lyrics printed in braille for her!

Our Students Reach Out
On Wednesday, three K1 students took a walk with Mr. Kershner over to Franciscan Children's Hospital to visit one of their classmates, Samuel who is a patient there. Over April vacation, Samuel developed an infection and was hospitalized at Children's Hospital. His condition was very serious but he is now getting better. Last weekend he was moved to Franciscan Children's Hospital to receive physical and occupational therapy as he continues his recovery. He expects to go home next week but had tons of fun with his friends at the playground at the hospital.
