Dear Families,

This week, empathy, one of the core principles of Expeditionary Learning has been enveloping my thoughts.

We know that the learning of empathy and caring is fostered best in communities where students' and teachers' ideas are respected and where there is mutual trust. We strive to be role models for the students to see and emulate.  They find that demonstrating empathy is hard; it's takes time and effort to demonstrate awareness & understanding of the other's point of view, especially when they each think that they are right. It is not always easy to understand why another thinks or feels the way they do. One needs to keep in mind that people are entitled to their opinions and should be free to have them so as long as they articulate their feelings with respect for others. It means putting others ahead of yourself and really listening and trying to understand the other person's point of view.

At Conservatory Lab, part of our culture is to be open to ideas and the thinking of others.  We need to take the time to understand why others feel as they do and be willing to communicate calmly, honestly and in a caring manner.

Have a pleasant week end.

Warmly,

Diana Lam

New Principal Announced

The Board of Trustees and Head of School, Diana Lam are pleased to announce the selection of Nicole Michna Bradeen as the Conservatory Lab Charter School's Pre-K to 8 Principal. The selection process included input from all segments of the school community including parents, staff, teachers, El Sistema staff, administration, and the Board of Trustees.

Mrs. Bradeen earned her Master's Degree in Education from Lesley College and a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from Columbia University, in New York. She has extensive teaching, coaching, and administrative experience. This includes five years as Program Director for Breakthrough Collaborative, an intensive summer program for low income urban middle school students. It also includes 5 years as Academic Program Manager at the Esther B. Clark School in California, a school serving public school students with acute emotional, behavioral, and learning needs referred from 30 sending districts. In addition, she served as Dean of Instruction for Coliseum College Preparatory Academy in California, a public school working with a student population with high dropout rates. As a former clarinetist and pianist, she understands the power of discipline, creativity, and teamwork that comes from making music.

Mrs. Bradeen's strengths include her experience of fortifying special services to address the individual and varying needs of students. She is an instructional leader and curriculum thinker, passionate about education and working with teachers, is a clear communicator, and her collaborative approach and problem solving style resonate with her stated belief that, "Building relationships drives change."

Nicole Michna Bradeen's appointment begins July 1, 2015. I hope you will join us in welcoming her to the Conservatory Lab Charter School.

4th Grade on Fleek

Today, Ms. Gampel-Tzadok's 4th grade class is proud to celebrate their earning 500 crew points with a fabulous out-of-uniform Friday! Our five crew qualities are cooperation, responsibility, perseverance, reflection, and empathy, and they have really focused on cooperation and responsibility. The theme they all dressed for is Dress to Impress: Flawless on Fleek. As Ms. Gampel-Tzadok notes, if you don't know what "on fleek" means, a 4th grader will be happy to explain that it means "very good" or "on point". You can check out the 4th graders' fly outfits in the banner photo above!

From the Top Visits Conservatory Lab

Throughout this past week, five of our students have had the privilege of working with a few of the accomplished high school- and college-aged musicians in the From the Top program during their week-long residency at our school.

Jaylan Vaughn (cello), Emma-Sophia Guevara (viola), Chansly Beauvoir (violin), Ezavier Santiago (violin), and Oliver Lee (bass) spent two hours every day under the mentorship of the From the Top musicians, who tutored our students on chamber music.

This exchange happens between our school and From the Top twice a year, and culminates in a concert at the end of the week to showcase the work Conservatory Lab's and From the Top's work.

The concert will be today at 3pm, and will be reported in next week's Family Notes!

8th Grade Learning to Compose the Blues

The 8th grade is in the process of composing Blues Poems. The poems follow the ABAB poem format after Langston Hughes. These poems will then be transformed into music and performed at The House of Blues in June. The combination of poetry and music will be a combination of Humanities work and EL Sistema. The students will attend the House of Blues in May to prepare for their performance.

Thanks for a Successful Scholastic Book Fair!

In the week before April break, our school had the pleasure of hosting a very successful book fair! At our location in Brighton, our cash profit was $638.95. In Dorchester, our profit was $889.80. A huge thanks to all the families who supported our students' love of reading, and our school! And a special thanks to Myriah Johnson and her son Emerson (pictured above), who helped ensure the book fair ran smoothly every day.
