Dear Families,

As we prepare to go on our annual Spring Break I want to express my thanks to all - students, teachers and parents - for the passion, commitment and professional dedication you continuously give to the school.

And also wish you a happy, restful week enjoying the glorious spring weather.

In those vernal seasons

of the year, when the

air is calm and pleasant,

it were an injury and

sullenness against Nature

not to go out and see

her riches, and partake

in her rejoicing with

heaven and earth.

 -John Milton

Warmly,

Diana Lam

With over 1250 audience members and performances by all 400 Conservatory Lab students spread among 7 orchestras, Spring Fling! 2015 was a hit on Saturday at the John Hancock Hall in Back Bay. It was a real joy to have so many of the school's community members under the same roof to support the wonderful accomplishments of the students.

Our K1 and K2 rockstars did a great job!

Ellington Orchestra is ready for the big time!

Heifetz & Casals upped the game with their excellent performances!

Second and Third Graders in the Field

Both 3rd grade classes got some hands-on training at the Harvard Museum of Natural History on Wednesday as they develop their skills as mineralogists exploring the fascinating underground world of rocks and minerals.

They learned how scientists use color, heft, hardness, and other properties to identify minerals and discovered the surprising uses of minerals around the home.

Each student will become an expert in a mineral and used some of their time to look at specimens of "their" mineral in the large Mineral Hall. The joy of discovery was apparent on all their faces as they found large, beautiful examples of what they were studying.

Parents: Please Respond to Extended Day Program Survey

As we plan for our Wednesday Early Release days next year, we are working with the YMCAs closest to each school to create an Extended Day program at each school site.  Please complete the survey found here - http://goo.gl/forms/Ku02LnhGcV - by April 28 to help us design a plan to fit the needs of our families.

It is important that we hear from every family! We have sent home the survey in backpacks and will follow up to make sure we hear from everyone this month.

Please note that we are information gathering only now.  When it is time to officially register for the programs, we will distribute that information.

Paper Orchestra Delights at the Children's Museum

This Tuesday, both K2 classes travelled to the Boston Children's Museum to present the 3rd Annual Paper Orchestra concert.  This event is an important milestone for the K2 musicians, who have now graduated to their Real Instruments.

The Paper Orchestra has been practicing important skills, including Rest and Playing positions, making beautiful bow-holds, moving their bows together as an orchestra, and learning how to take care of their instruments.  Above all, they have been learning that "an Orchestra works together" and by working together makes big, beautiful sound. They sang and "played" some old favorites like The Grand Old Duke of York and some specially written songs like The Bow Hold Highway. The audience of family, friends and museum-goers were hugely impressed with the program of songs and movements that showcase all the work of this group of young people.

Many of the family in the audience had been part of the team that built these instruments and so it was a proud moment for all to witness this important stage of musicianship.

Each instrument section has also been working on their individual skills and unity and camaraderie within their section.  Part of being in an orchestra means paying close attention to the movements and sounds of those around you.  The violins, the violas, the cellos and the basses are very excited to begin their work on Real Instruments when we return from April Break. They can't wait to wow you all at the Spring Concert on June 9!

1st Grade Makes Concrete Pig Pens

Today the first graders finished up their concrete pig pens. As part of their Three Little Pigs unit, they'd received a letter from one of the three little pigs asking how to make straw, wood, and concrete strong. The students used the engineering process to plan, design and create their pig pen in small crews.

It all started yesterday when they made concrete with our parent expert, Doug Bellow,  by mixing sand, gravel, cement and water together. They worked collaboratively to pour the mixture into molds. The molds dried over night into square or rectangular shape pieces.

The students used mortar to attach the concrete together. The first graders persevered through this last engineering challenge when they realized that the plan they sketched didn't work as they had anticipated.

The pig pens the students created demonstrated their understanding of the engineering process.

One student said that "it was nice to know how to build. We can build anything if you think of it you can plan it and put your ideas into action."
