Dear Parents,

As we prepare to celebrate Martin Luther King Day, I find it always valuable to review his history-making "I Have a Dream" speech.  Every time that I reread it I hear in one or another passage something that is particularly applicable to the present day events.

With all the tumult taking place in recent weeks in Ferguson, New York City and even here in Boston this week, the following passages seem particularly pertinent.

"We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children...

"And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. . . . .

"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.'

"With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day."

Have a wonderful week-end and enjoy the Martin Luther King Holiday.

Warmly,

Diana Lam

8th Grade Expedition is Two Learning Experiences for the Price of One

On Wednesday, our 8th grade class went to the Museum of African American History to see the Black Books exhibition. According to 8th grader Rayne Libcomb, "in the African American Museum it displayed a mix of magazines, pictures, books, posters, drawings and many more to represent all the situations and big parts of black history that went on then. It conveyed things like pictures and words of how the middle passage boats were set up, how they were taken, lived their lives for those months and what they went through."

Rayne's classmate Zakiya Lomax reflected on a specific part of the museum: "One of my favorite exhibits in the museum was learning about the fugitive slave act... We saw posters that warned the blacks that slave catchers were coming after them. I found this unique because it made me mad that once  slaves were free they could be enslaved again."

The students continued on their tour of history to see the film "Selma". Cities across the U.S. have coordinated a national campaign called #SelmaforStudents that encourages business leaders to underwrite free admission to film for students in 7th, 8th, and 9th grade. Our students were greatly affected by the film; in his reflection, Rayne wrote, "In the Selma movie it gave visuals of what went on then so people could really feel and see what happened. By actually watching it you start to get more of what you talk about in class. It was a heart-warming, sad, dramatic beautiful masterpiece.

"My favorite scene from the movie, Selma, was when after a man named Jimmie Lee Jackson died. Instead of being sad and giving up, they grieved for a while, Mr. King held a burial and made a flawless speech and it empowered them and made them fight twice as hard for their freedom to vote."

Zakiya wrote about her favorite scene, as well: "My favorite scene from the movie was when the pastor from Boston died. Not only was it sad that he died but that he was white and beaten to death by his own race for siding with black people. I was happy when Martin Luther King stood up for him and other people he didn't know after they died. He mourned the death of many people even though he didn't know them. I found that incredibly courageous and brave to mourn the death of unknown people and to put on a happy face for the community."

In their writing, the students were asked to talk about what their experiences at the museum and watching the film meant to them. Rayne wrote, "the experience affected me because it showed me all the pain and struggles black people went through and how they pushed through it and kept fighting for their justice and equality; It gave me a better understanding, plus I've never really actually understood the hard, depressing things they experienced until I actually saw it with my own eyes." Zakiya wrote, "In the past taking a stand helped get us to where we are today. In The African American Museum and The Movie Selma the importance and overall idea was taking a stand. The experience I had made me think that my grandparents and great-grandparents stood up to make my future better. I am proud to honor my family today."

Senator Linda Dorcena-Forry visits Conservatory Lab

On Monday, January 12, our school was honored with a visit from State Senator Linda Dorcena-Forry. Senator Dorcena-Forry has served in government for over 15 years. Throughout her career, she has championed improvements for education in Massachusetts. She is the proud parent of four children, hails as a proud Dorchester native, and her husband Bill is the editor and publisher of the Dorchester Reporter.

The Senator was thoroughly impressed with our school's efforts to disseminate our practices to other public schools. She said she was glad to see such an active institution that doesn't want to keep all its practices to itself. ""This is such an outstanding school, I want to invite the entire Boston delegation to come and view it," she said as she left.

Senator Dorcena-Forry serves as a board member for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Dorchester, the Milton Library Foundation, Friends for Children, College Bound Dorchester, among others. We are delighted that a legislator so concerned with education was so thoroughly engaged with our school! We look forward to the Senator's visits in the future.

Henry Matisse Visits K1 to Help Launch "Portrait of an Artist" Expedition

K1 has jumped into their study of art and artists with the official launch their expedition, "Portrait of an Artist." On Monday, Mr. Henri Matisse visited K1's classroom.

Matisse was a famous and skilled French artist, known for his use of color and shape in his paintings and cutouts. He (played by David Cordes) told K1 all about his job as an artist and the materials and tools he uses, and showed them some of his paintings. Matisse's visit inspired K1 to think about art and what artists do. It made the inquisitive K1 students wonder, how do artists make different shapes? How do artists know what to paint? What tools do artists use to make different textures in their work? Over the next few months, K1 will explore these questions while they learn how to make and paint with colors, as well as make connections between art and music. Soon, they will make their own self-portraits!

Spring Fling is Ready to Launch!

Conservatory Lab's PAC is ready to launch Spring Fling! 2015.  It will be held on Saturday, April 11, and will be comprised of two concerts on the same day: one showcasing grades K-1 through 3 at 11:00 a.m., and one showcasing grades 4 through 8 at 2:00 p.m. It promises to be the most exciting Annual PAC Fundraising event ever! Spring Fling! is the only event at Conservatory Lab Charter School that is led by the families.

This two-performances-in-the-same day format is necessitated by the increase in school size and tremendous support from families and friends that this event has traditionally garnered. All students will perform in one of the two shows.

This year, Spring Fling will be in John Hancock Hall, in the Back Bay Events Center. The space is beautiful, has a great stage, sound, several spacious backstage rooms, additional rooms on lower level and every seat in hall has a great sight line of the performance. It is a venue that will create a comfortable and professional show. Capacity of the venue is around 1,000, and offers designated seating.

Mark for your calendars for you, your family and friends to attend and participate in this joyful, whole school parent-led event.
