Dear Families,

Today, being Halloween, I am thinking about the important role that play and fun have in our lives and specifically in children's development.

During play, children increase their social competence and emotional maturity. The youngest ones, by engaging in role-play, are able to process and cope with some of their fears, desires and new experiences in a safe and fun way. We know success in school largely depends on children's ability to interact positively with their peers and adults, so play allows children to practice both verbal and nonverbal communication skills by negotiating roles, trying to gain access to ongoing play, and appreciating the feelings of others. Older children also learn valuable emotional skills, such as increasingly realistic self-perceptions, the ability to manage their emotions, and self-control that improves over time through popular games or those they invent for their group.  As older children engage in spontaneous and structured play activities, they develop both leadership skills and team skills.

Playfulness and the enjoyment that comes with it also develops creative and imaginative abilities which stimulate curiosity and allows them to experiment with alternative responses to different situations. This is the basis of problem solving. When the imagination is at play, the result is more creativity and better performance at school tasks.

Halloween is a playful time, where costumes and pretend can be enjoyed by all.  Have fun!

Warmly,

Diana Lam

How We Are Smart

Part of the discovery and exploration that the 2nd graders are engaged in this month has to do with the different types of intelligence that one can have.  Yes, that is right, there is not only one kind of intelligence but at least eight!  These are: Logical - numbers smart, linguistic - word smart, naturalist - nature smart, spatial - picture smart, kinesthetic - body smart, musical - music smart, interpersonal - people smart and intra-personal - self smart.  The students each chose one of these as their own to write about and draw. The end results were delightful and on exhibit on the 2nd grade classroom door for everyone to admire and to wonder about.  Which kinds of smart am I?

First Grade Community Walk

Who are our neighbors?  Where do they work and what do they do?  At the beginning of their Neighbor to Neighbor expedition, 1st graders extend their understanding of community beyond the school walls to explore the school's neighborhood and what it means to be a good neighbor.

A community walk launches the expedition. Students go out in small groups with a map filled with question marks.  They must find and identify several buildings including the post office, the police station, and the courthouse as well as several local shops. After identifying the important buildings, services, and community helpers that distinguish our Brighton neighborhood, students collaborate to create a neighborhood map.   Over the next month, students will interview community helpers and consider the role of community leaders.
