Dear Families,

We have begun our 2014-2015 school year. Many new things greet us - new students, new teachers, new hours, new administrative structure and for many of us, a whole new site! But through it all we do not forget who we are, what our essence is and what we are here to do.

We are all fortunate to be a part of this remarkable community where education, the arts, especially music and core values are the bedrock of our existence. These elements unify us, give us focus and energize our activities.

Our motto is "We are crew, not passengers". At its core, this short saying has the imbedded meaning of cooperation, responsibility and perseverance.  We all pull together, doing our best or we don't move forward. At the same time we acknowledge and respect our fellow crew members by empathizing with how they are feeling.

And perhaps, most importantly, we encourage reflection to understand the what and why of people and events and our role in creating the best possible outcomes.

We have begun our 2014-2015 school year. Together, we can make it the best possible for all!

Warmly,

Diana Lam

Transportation Update

We want to acknowledge the difficulties that families have gone through with the snafus in bus transportation. We are working assiduously with Boston Public Schools to resolve the causes of theses bus delays that have impacted all of us.

In order to facilitate and ensure safe and smooth arrival and dismissal procedures at 2120 Dorchester Ave. we are making the following requests of you:

  • Know that we share the parking area at the top of the hill with Carney Hospital
  • For drivers-please drop your child off at 7:15a.m., as there is no adult supervision before that time.
  • If you are going to change the instructions for how your child is to go home on a given day, please notify  the receptionist before noon. Failure to notify us by this time may result in not being able to accommodate to your late request. Emergency situations are exempted.
  • Do not park your car in front of the school. There are parking spaces on Dorchester Ave.
  • There are three specific pick-up places for children: those who travel by bus, those whose parents walk them and those whose parents pick them up in a car. Take time to note where YOUR child's pick up point is.
  • If you need to have a conversation with a teacher or an administrator, kindly make an appointment for a time other than arrival or dismissal as these are untimely moments.

A Note From Primary School Director, Brad Kershner

Dear Families,

It's September! The heat is still with us, but summer is officially fading and a new school year is finally here. Our Primary School staff was overjoyed to welcome our new and returning students on Thursday, and to switch gears from preparation and planning to teaching, singing, playing and learning with children.

Now that the first two days of school are already behind us, I am proud to say that we have begun the year superbly. Our first days were filled with an exciting blend of familiarity and novelty,  as returning students greeted old friends and new teachers, as well as new friends and familiar adults. And while things are much newer and more unknown for our K1 students, the fun and friendliness of their first days have set the tone for an extremely positive school experience this year.

For our staff, it is clear that the time and effort that we expended in August has already paid off, and the initial results are an abiding sense of calm, confidence, and competence, which no doubt have set the tone for our students. We have brought a great deal of intentionality to this new school year, and are ready to move forward with our students in a joyous and collaborative adventure of learning.

We look forward to your support along the way, and if you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Brad Kershner

Dear Families,

We have had an amazing week!  Thank you for trusting us with your precious children.  We understand that school can be a leap of faith but education is one of the most valuable gifts we can give to our children.  Here at Conservatory Lab we take this very seriously.  In order to provide the education your children deserve we must spend time establishing routines and structures that maximize our time together and facilitate a safe environment.

Safety is actually our first priority so that we can create this magical place of learning.  We ask that you support us in this goal.  If you want to speak to a teacher or other staff member, please call or email to set up a time that works for both of you.  In order to minimize disruptions, we ask that you do not come to your child's classroom during the school day unless you have arranged it with the teacher.  It is also necessary that you fill out a CORI if you are going to volunteer and/or chaperone any of our field work. We will continue to reach out to you for support and feedback in the coming months.  You are your child's number one advocate and we intend to be right there with you.

This week I was able to spend time in all of the grades 2, 3, and 4 classrooms as well as some of the El Sistema classes.  It was incredible to see the patience and community building that took place among both students and teachers.  In one classroom, I participated in an activity that helped us learn each other's names using a ball. It fostered reflection and perseverance as we worked to improve on our own group time and stayed safe.  I loved being part of that crew!

Rest and enjoy the beautiful weekend!  We are looking forward to our first full week!

Warm wishes and cool days,

Shalem Livingston

Dear Conservatory Lab Community,

Welcome to what promises to be an awesome new school year at Conservatory Lab!  We are incredibly excited about our new temporary facility and the opportunity to introduce 6th - 8th graders to the new place and new faces.  Middle School Orientation was filled with opportunities for students to get know the staff, get to know each other, learn the structure and routines of each day, and most importantly, learn and live our Crew Qualities. COOPERATIVE. RESPONSIBLE. PERSERVERANT. EMPATHETIC. REFLECTIVE.

This year promises to be filled with many golden opportunities for growth for all our students.  As we begin this new year, we pledge to you . . . our students and parents . . . that it will be a wonderful year of engaging, meaningful and rigorous work in our classrooms and music rooms, along with some fun and special times through Crew Meetings, Grade Level Community Meetings,  and performances.

Our staff of highly qualified professional educators and support personnel is committed to creating a culture of achievement that celebrates learning.  We pledge that this will be our focus daily, and we invite and encourage you to work in partnership with us.  We highly value home/school communication. It is vital and plays an integral role in each student's success.  Please do not hesitate to contact us if/when the need arises.  We will do likewise.  We want and encourage our parents to stay in the know about your child's studies, assignments, assessments, and school activities, as well as other events and happenings.

Here's to a FABULOUS new school year . . .  and making each day better than the one before!!

Sincerely,

Robyn

Pictures Please

We all love to see pictures of our students in action and we share those pictures with our families and community in several ways.  If you haven't already, please "like" our Facebook page.  We often post pictures and invitations to performances and other types of events.

In addition, the school maintains a school-wide Shutterfly site where we post pictures of celebrations, concerts and fieldwork.  You do not need to join Shutterfly to see these pictures; just go to www.conservatorylab.shutterfly.com.  The password for this site is "music".  Feel free to share the link and password with your friends and family.  Some teachers use their own Shutterfly sites to post classroom photos.  In order to have access to those sites you DO need to join Shutterfly.  If your child's teacher is using Shutterfly, she will send you an invitation to join.

Picture Day this year will be on Thursday, September 25th for the Elementary and Upper Schools (Dorchester site) and Friday, September 26th for the Primary School (Brighton site).  We are using a new vendor, Photo Charm.  Check out their website and look for order forms coming home in backpacks next week.
