Dear Families,

These weeks in June are some of my favorites during the year.  It is a time for Springtime concerts and classroom celebrations that mark the progress which our students have made during this second half of the year. The performance aspect of these events spurs students to muster all their poise and outgoing skills which develop their self-awareness and confidence.

I personally identify with the pride and joy so evident in the parents' faces. I know the hopes, dreams and aspirations that we all have for our children and how meaningful it is when we begin to see glimmers of the realizations of those dreams.  We all form part of the mosaic in which our students live and develop, each person and experience contributing an individual color, texture and design to the overall composition.  These culminating events in which we are partaking during this month are the strokes that give brilliant hue to this mosaic.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Warmly,

Ms. Lam

Youngest Musicians Perform in Spring Concert I

Spring Concert I was held on June 11th and presented students in K-1 thru 2nd grade and was a wonderful demonstration of the sequence and progression which our students follow.  We witnessed 4 yr. olds singing in unison, 5 year olds singing rounds in multiple part harmony,  1st graders playing with their bows on their real (no longer paper!) instruments after only six weeks having them and the 2nd graders playing the Theme from Beethoven's 5th as an orchestra!

Another remarkable feature of Wednesday's program also included three K-1 students singing solo in the number The Sun Comes Up. Songs selected for these students were all from the pentatonic American Folk Songbook which helps students begin to understand musical intervals which are the stepping stones to western classical harmony.

The Benjamin Franklin Institute was packed to the rafters with beaming parents who were delighted and amazed at the skills and musicianship that their children demonstrated at this concert.

More photos can be found on Facebook and on Shutterfly (remember the password is "music") and several videos are already posted on our Youtube channel.

Bravo to all!

Revolutionary Research

This year in 4th grade, students have learned so much about the research process and the different types of research that exist today. They have conducted research of their own during this Research is Revolutionary Unit, and were happy to share their findings with families and peers!

Fourth grade showcased three final research products today. Each product's intent was to inform or change the way someone may think about that given topic. Revolutionary thinking has been the theme for the year, and they have focused on that theme while conducting research.

The products include: a poster about an aspect of the solar system, a brochure about the different  countries our students have roots in, and a graph that shows their findings for how much it cost to feed a family of 4. Each topic changed something about how students thought, and even charged parents to learn something new or look at something they knew in a different way.

Reflecting on the research process, Kailyn Dubuisson said "... you should always research and find out new things and you should also try to be revolutionary; the more you know, the more you make change!"

Thank You Mr. Weinstein!

For the past three years, Mr. Weinstein has been one of our most stalwart volunteers, working with small groups of math students every week.  These 4th and 5th grade students are proud to join the ranks of "Mr. Weinstein students" and we as a school community are so grateful for his support!  See you next year!

Field Day Coming Up

Field Day is a long-standing fun, outdoor tradition at our school.  Students are configured into teams and play cooperative games down at McKinney Field, the park closest to 25 Arlington Street. One week ahead, students will be informed which color team they are on. They are expected to wear a t-shirt in that color and sneakers in order to play games on the field.  Students must also bring a full water bottle (no juice) so they can spend the morning (or the afternoon) outside.  We also recommend that both sunscreen and bug spray be applied before the event.  Field Day traditionally ends with a water balloon toss so get ready to get wet!

This year, due to our expanded size, Field Day will be divided into two groups.  On Tuesday, June 24th, students in grades K2 through 5 will compete from 9:30 AM to noon and then from 1 PM to 3 PM our middle schoolers will take the field.  Parents are welcome to attend and we are looking for volunteers to run games during the morning session.  If you are interested in volunteering, please email Ms. Sevelius at asevelius@conservatorylab.org.  Any other questions, please email Ms. Mostello, emostello@conservatorylab.org or Ms. Perella, aperella@conservatorylab.org.  It's sure to be a fun day for all!

Things That Roar

Lions roar,

like an airplane.

Airplanes roar,

like the wind.

The wind roars,

like a tiger.

A tiger roars

like a bear.

Things that roar.
