Dear Families,

Memorial Day weekend has a special significance for school children and their families.  It usually signals that the school year is soon to end and that summer vacation is about to begin. We will have more time to spend with our family and friends and be relaxed.  It is also a time to take stock of what has been accomplished, what we wish to improve, what we have come to know is important and to set goals for the coming school year.  An important update regarding facilities, staffing, and transportation was sent home today in backpacks as well as via email.

Some important realizations come as we make plans for family gatherings, for fun and relaxation this weekend.  It is a good time to take stock of whom we want to spend time with, whom we are thankful to for their love, help and support and whom we know we want to have in our lives. As you are with your loved ones, give warm hugs, these are the people to treasure. Cherish the times together for these memories are the companions you will take with you through life.

I come from a culture where hugs abound and those loving squeezes go a long way in just about any situation.  Have a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend!

Warmly,

Ms. Lam

Mayor Walsh Comes to Brighton

On Wednesday our 1st graders welcomed Mayor Marty Walsh to Joyce Playground with songs and smiles. The Mayor came to the playground as part of his series of coffee hours held throughout the city during the month of May to give local residents an opportunity to share their ideas and concerns for the city.

Mayor Walsh was joined by elected officials City Councilor Mark Ciommo, Representative Kevin Honan and leaders from both the police department and Parks department. The first graders, led by Resident Artist David Cordes, sang several songs as the crowd gathered and then sang Lean on Me for the Mayor. He was so impressed, he asked for another song and the students were happy to oblige with Peace Like A River. They helped the Mayor cut the ribbon welcoming residents to the new tot lot. We are proud of how our first graders represent our school and our community!

Parent Advisory Council

Last Wednesday the Parent Advisory Council held its final meeting of the year/Ice Cream Social and is still looking to spread the word for new volunteers. As the Upper School moves to Dorchester and the Lower School remains in Brighton, the increased geographic distance between the two locations creates a greater need to have representatives at both locations. In addition to more PAC Board reps, more meetings will be held in neighborhoods around the city so PAC can meet the needs identified by you. We will continue with the PAC Board positions of chair, co-chair, treasurer, and secretary, but we'd also like to benefit from the interests and skills that our families have.

Maybe you are great with websites, fundraising, marketing, or organizing volunteers and you feel you can contribute in these areas (or others) to help improve our community. If you have an idea for a PAC Board position that would work for you, please volunteer and tell us how you think you can help. We are open to creating new positions to fill any gaps we might have on the board.

Please see the PAC website for information on the current PAC Board positions and volunteer for an existing role or come up with your own.

Winds Recital

Last Sunday, Winds students from both Conservatory Lab and Lexington's Keys for Kids got together on the stage of the Boston Conservatory and performed a beautiful program of small and large ensemble pieces for family and friends.

Here is the message Mr. Schroeder wrote for the program:

"As artists, we spend countless hours preparing new music, refining our individual parts, and learning how all our parts work to create a full ensemble sound and complete musical idea. We are artisans governed by time, however the key element in this process is how we spend our time. As educators, music or otherwise, our pursuit at its most basic level is to transfer knowledge. However, the core of this pursuit is to instill character traits that provide a foundation for our students' continued growth and success.

Focus. Perseverance. Pride. These concepts permeate and transcend our rehearsals and performances, strengthening these young artists' confidence and desire to affect change in their lives and communities around them.

The measure of one's success is not only realized in their achievements, but in their continued pursuit for excellence. We come together every year to showcase not only a high level of musical understanding and expression, but to demonstrate our growth as individuals who choose to make a difference and constantly seek higher knowledge and understanding. Each piece on this program not only showcases the time spent, but demonstrates each child's vested interest in producing high-quality results and the ability to constantly strive for greatness."

We thank these Mr. Schroeder, Mr. Ruiz, these students and their families for a beautiful recital.

2nd Grade Lego Car Rally

On Tuesday and Wednesday our 2nd graders went to MIT to participate in a Motorized Car Lego Rally at the Edgerton Center. Students worked in teams to build cars that went through two tests. A tilt test (how far could you lift a board before the car falls off and a ramp test (can your car get over the ramp and how far can it go).

Students had to describe their car before each test.  After each test, students had to theorize the strengths and weaknesses of their current car, and then revised their car, being encouraged to just change one variable, rather than re-starting the process all over again.

Students had to use cooperation, problem solving and perseverance to build and revise their cars.  Many students made connections to the reflection and revision process they are currently using to draw scientifically accurate snakes.

The students also showed perseverance during the trip back and forth as they had to walk almost a mile after they got off the bus Kenmore Square to MIT.  What a great way to see the city!
