Dear Families,

The MCAS tests have been completed for this year. Congratulations to our students that showed perseverance and skill in taking these yearly exams and to the teachers that prepared the students to take them. Clearly these tests are important to all our students, 3rd grade and up, since they measure the knowledge and skills that they have acquired in school.

However here at Conservatory Lab these tests are not the end all and be all of how we measure our student's entire progress. We not only want our students to know concrete facts and figures we also want them to have the ability to analyze abstract problems and to think logically, to respond to social situations with both composure and engagement, to feel in command of themselves and their ability to deal with what might face them.  With music instruction being another key part of their schooling here, other aspects of their cognition are influenced, such as learning to perceive and derive meaning from musical sounds, which sharpens a student's ability to comprehend abstractions. Music education as an enhancement strengthens the students' overall focus, attention memory, and executive function, all extremely valuable to the overall growth of the students' achievement.

Learning the basics of musical language and interpreting a work through performance teaches a student the ability to understand a problem and reach an appropriate solution.  Aspects of their social development are impacted as they learn to work and perform with their peers in sections of an orchestra.

Our goal with each student is to develop in them a flexibility of mind and openness of spirit which prepares them with the knowledge and skills to respond to many situations with confidence, deftness and artistry.

Have a delightful weekend.

Warmly,

Ms. Lam

Come See the Monkey King

Our 6th graders are very busy preparing for their production of the Wild and Wonderful Monkey King to be performed twice during the first week in June.  As part of their Journeys Across Continents: The Silk Road Expedition, the students are learning techniques of Peking Opera including staged kung fu and fan dances as elements of the production.  Experts have come in to teach workshops in percussion and storytelling as well.  Many parents have volunteered to help make costumes and build sets.  The students have memorized their lines and are having a great time working on the blocking and the acting.

We are looking forward to sharing these performances with everyone in our school community.  The first public performance will be on Tuesday, June 3rd, in the (Upper) school auditorium at 3 PM.  All students from grades k2 to grade 7 will attend and everyone is welcome.  The second performance will take place on Friday, June 6th at Roxbury Community College at 5:30 PM and will be followed by a potluck reception.  We encourage all families to come to either performance and to invite anyone else who may be interested.  The show is sure to be spectacular!

MCAS 2014

This week our students finished taking the MA Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) in grades 3 through 7.  All students spent Monday and Tuesday answering Math Multiple Choice and Open Response questions.  All teachers and staff pitched in to make the testing period a calm and focused time so all students could do their best.  On Wednesday and Thursday, the 5th grade had one more test to take - the Science MCAS - answering questions covering topics taught in 3rd through 5th grade: earth, life, and physical sciences.  We appreciate everyone in our school community contributing to the success of our students on this important assessment.  Preliminary results will be sent to the school this summer and individual student reports will be sent to families in the fall.

Colorful Convection

By Alphie Devita, 6th grade reporter

This week in our 6th grade science class we tested a type of heat transfer: convection!

We started by filling two jars with water: one hot and colored red and one cold and colored blue. We made our prediction of what would happen when we put the hot water jar on top of the cold water jar (see below). Then we pulled out the card that kept the liquids separate.

We watched as the blue stayed at the bottom and the red stayed at the top! We then diagrammed our findings. Then we repeated the process, but with the blue water jar on top. This time the colors mixed as the blue went down and the red went up and formed a solid shade of purple.

We learned that this happened because of convection. Convection causes hot less dense fluids to rise and colder more dense fluids to sink.

To And Fro

Today each campus had some very special visitors!

At 9 AM, the Dudamel Percussion students spent an hour in the K2 classroom showing the young musicians what they could do and playing along with the songs of morning music.

At lunchtime, K2 returned the favor with a visit to their 5th grade book buddies.  They spent lunch and recess with their older classmates, building on the special relationships they have already built through reading together.
