Dear Families,

What a joy it was to see so many of our grandparents, parents, and friends in attendance at this year's first whole-school assembly! It was a sea of familiar and new faces that now form our expanded community. We were all so happy and proud to see how much our students had progressed in the first three months of school. The students themselves were also happy, nervous and pleased to be able to perform at such a level for their most important audience. From the very first strains of the Scherzo movement of the Apollo Suite, by Merle Isaac, the high caliber of performance for this assembly was established. It moved along at a merry pace with the 1st presentation of the Ives Ensemble, The Dudamel Winds showing their versatility to play both high energy and quiet, contemplative pieces and ending on a stirring note with the Abbado Percussion Ensemble. As I looked around at that fully packed Assembly Hall yesterday, I counted my blessings. My grateful thanks to all that make this school an on-going, pulsing, vibrant reality.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Warmly,

Ms. Lam

First All-School Assembly of the Year

Conservatory Lab all-school assemblies are truly a spectacle to behold, and there was something particularly special about yesterday's first all-school assembly of the school year. As the first assembly since the school's expansion, this was the most monumental Conservatory Lab gathering to date! As columns of students from both the Upper and Lower Schools filed into the gym with their families, the holiday spirit was in the air, thanks in no small part to Mr. Chris Schroeder and the Dudamel Winds and Brass for providing a lovely musical backdrop of classic holiday tunes.

Following a greeting from Head of School Diana Lam and Lower School Principal Annie Sevelius, the Abbado Orchestra took to the stage to kick off the event. Conductor Josh Garver led this new orchestra in their Conservatory Lab debut, performing two high-energy pieces, "Burst" and the "Scherzo" from the Apollo Suite, which were expertly executed by the ensemble of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. Also with their Conservatory Lab debut were the Ives Winds, a new wind and brass ensemble consisting of 6th and 7th graders who are new to this school this year. Even having only played their instruments for two months, the Ives Winds students put on an impressive show with "When the Saints Go Marching In," inspiring the audience to enthusiastically clap along! The thunderous show of support from the audience following their performance as well as the musician's own beaming smiles revealed that their months of hard work had truly paid off. To end the assembly, the stage was again taken by the Dudamel Winds and Brass as well as the Abbado Percussion Ensemble, who roused the audience with a performance of the theme from "I Dream of Jeannie," complete with student percussionists playing salsa rhythms on drums. There was a visible sway to the audience, as students, teachers, and families moved their bodies to the music and clapped along with the salsa rhythms.

It is during events like this assembly that we are reminded of all that we can achieve together as a school in even a short amount of time. Although we now have two different locations, this distance is far from being a barrier. Our community is stronger and closer than ever, and we are so excited to see our students showcase their continuing progress at the upcoming Winter Concerts!

Correction:

Last week's article about geography was about the 3rd grade Expedition, not the 4th grade.

PAC Potluck and Math Night

Last Friday the Parent Advisory Council held a Potluck/Math Night event at the Boston Nature Center in Mattapan, reviving an old tradition in the school of combining a social event with a learning activity.  It was a great evening, full of introductions and conversations, good food and fun for all ages.

Thanks to parent Karen Lombard, an arrangement was made to use the hall and the classrooms at the Boston Nature Center in Mattapan.  Families each brought a dish that was placed on a sideboard and then helped themselves buffet style to what was on offer.  There was a wide variety of dishes from vegetable lasagne to rosemary chicken to fruit salad.  There was plenty of food for all but, interestingly, lightest on dessert. What a healthy crowd!  Karen and Michelle Gurel also organized the set up and clean up of the space.

After everyone finished dinner, parent Jenna Wertheimer introduced an ice breaker bingo game designed to get everyone up and talking to one another.  Children and parents alike took their papers and pencils around the room, looking for someone to sign in each block of their 5 by 5 grid of descriptors.  We all now know someone who "doesn't like chocolate" (Indiamara's grandmother, Beatriz), someone who was "born in another country" and someone who "lives in Hyde Park."  What a great way to make new friend!

After the ice breaker, families were encouraged to go into the classrooms in different age groups to play a variety of math games.  These were also set up by Jenna with a little help from curriculum specialist Elise Mostello.  Families could stay as long as they liked and many stayed for an hour playing cards or other math games.

The evening was very well attended and for that we would like to thank parents Christine Cox and Adaleta Maslo-Krkovic for writing and sending emails to all families and PAC chair Myriah Johnson for organizing the whole event.  We hope this becomes a new/old school tradition.

Giving Thanks Teach In

The 3rd graders brought their historical expertise on the road on Tuesday as they walked up to the Lower Campus for a Thanksgiving teach in.  In three groups they presented the history and meaning of Thanksgiving to each classroom.  Each member of each group had a scripted presentation and then they opened it up for questions.  The younger students were a rapt and engaged audience as the third graders described the original Thanksgiving meal between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag native people of Pautuxet or Plymouth.  They described the living structures and the culture of the time as well as the different belief system of each group.  They made explicit the reasons why the original celebrants wanted to have a Thanksgiving Festival and why it is still celebrated today.

After the question and answer session, the 3rd graders performed Pat Humphries' Swimming to the Other Side.  Presenters and audiences all did a wonderful job speaking, listening and asking questions.  We are looking forward to future exchanges as we are thankful that we can all learn from one another.

From The Top Chamber Residency

Last week, five area teenaged musicians led a chamber music residency with a group of student musicians from our school.  The high schoolers are part of From the Top's Center for the Development of Arts Leaders (CDAL Boston) which "offers a range of opportunities for young musicians in Greater Boston to use the transformative power of music to engage new audiences, give back to their communities, and explore their leadership pathways as 21st century musicians." They came every day after school to work one on one and in a small group with our students culminating in a performance on Friday afternoon for family and friends and the rest of the Dudamel Orchestra.

Cellist Ju Hyun Lee, from BU Academy participated in this program last year and was eager to come back.  She worked with 5th grader Junior Fuentes, helping him learn the special set of skills required to work as a chamber musician.  Lilia Chang, a Weston High School violinist, worked with 5th grader Olivia Cox as well as the whole group showing the students how to cue one another for entrances.  Nicholas Gallitano, a violist from Brookline High School, spent time on technique with his charge, 4th grader Mayara Ryland.

Fourth grader Tess Lepeska-True and 6th grader Jelitza Romero worked with Leland Ko, a cellist from Weston HS, and Calvin Kim, a clarinetist from the Walnut Hill School for the Arts on observation skills and following one another's lead.  When you play in a chamber ensemble there is no conductor so everyone must lead and everyone must follow.  These are tricky lessons to learn but, as this clip shows, our students made great strides over the course of the week.

The CDAL students clearly enjoyed their time with us and are looking forward to March when they will return to work with another group of our student musicians.

Parent Conversations

The parent committee of the School Advisory Circle (SAC) is hosting a series of Open Conversations with families about their children's experiences with the school. The SAC serves as a liaison between families and the school, and meets throughout the year with teachers and administrators to build a community of support for the success of the children and the school. Our hope is that these Open Conversations will lead SAC to better represent the needs of all students at CLCS.

We welcome new and experienced parents and families to join us at any of the dates and times below. The format will be open and conversational. If you need a translator, either bring your own or let us know, and we will try to find a volunteer. If you are able to volunteer as a translator in any language, please let us know. Child care will not be provided, but as these are public library settings you are welcome to bring your children. Please note this is a Public Meeting at the Library so any parents/families are welcome to join.

If you have questions, or to RSVP, please contact parents Ramika Smith, (lower school parent and the PAC liaison), <ramikasmith@gmail.com>, Doug Bellow <doug@ggbbuilds.com> (lower school parent), Melina OGrady melogrady@gmail.com (upper school parent), or Hansella Robson, <hrobson01@gmail.com> (middle school parent).

School Calendars For Sale

Every year the school creates a calendar which serves as a reminder of the achievements and performances of the past year and as our Annual Report full of information about the school.  This year's calendar is a beautiful testament to the power of education and music and is filled with the faces of our children.

The calendars will be for sale at $10 each at every school event: PAC meetings and concerts but you can also send your student in with money and a note any time (the orders can be brought to the front desk at each building) and we will send them home the next day with the number of calendars you would like.
