Dear Families,
With all the disarray in our nation's capital this week, my mind has been filled with thoughts of the elements that are part of good citizenship and good community which we strive to develop in our students and in our school.
Primary among these is compassion, which is one of the values that our middle school students have made part of their Creed. As a compassionate person each wants to use their words and actions to console and care for others in need. They want to try to see things from someone else's perspective. I see that inherent in this are the concepts of respect, tolerance and understanding of each other and a sharing of ideas that goes into making sensible rules that govern a community well.
We need good citizens to build good communities to make our world a happier, safer place to be. Some of the signs of a good community include shared values, diversity and thoughtful discussion about the issues that affect the community. We have a common need to come together to share and to help those who cannot help themselves. There are good things in our world which must be cherished and looked after by all those who value them. Our responsibility is to care for our community and our world and have our actions demonstrate that.
Have a wonderful week-end.
Warmly,

Diana Lam

Welcome Ms. Ramsey
Please help us welcome Ms. Nefta Ramsey, our new receptionist.
She is an alum of the first graduating class at Codman Academy Charter Public School. She has a strong background in administrative work, within the health and customer service fields and a passion for working with children from different communities and backgrounds. That passion is driven by this motto, which she strives to live by... " To the world you may be one person, but to one person...you may be the world."

Last Sunday, our school participated in Circle The City, a civic event organized by the Emerald Necklace Conservancy, the Boston Collaborative for Food and Fitness, Livable Streets Alliance, Boston Cyclist's Union, Sustainability Guild International and the City of Boston. For the second time this year, these organizations closed a street to car traffic, this time it was Blue Hill Avenue, and opened the street to family fun.
Why Open Streets in Boston? Circle the City:
1. Builds community and supports local business.
2. Re-imagines the city street as a place for people.
3. Promotes safe physical activity and healthy lifestyles for all.
4. Gets people of all ages outside and connected to our parks.
5. Furthers the City's goals for a healthy, vibrant, livable Boston.
The communications team of Conservatory Lab staffed a table, letting people know about our school and taking down contact info for people interested in learning more. Resident Artist Chris Schroeder brought the Dudamel Brass to perform at our table and alongside other street performers including the community band, Jamaica Plain Honk! Many of our families participated in the event, riding bikes, practicing goal kicks, and creating flying toys at the Science Museum table. A great time was had by all and we can't wait to see which streets they shut down and open up next!

A friendly face you may have seen in the classrooms is that of Pavithra Arvind. She is a doctoral researcher from the University of Exeter in the UK, and is exploring transformation through arts and music-infused creative learning at our school. Observing and interacting with students and staff at both of our school locations, she is doing research on the learning experiences at the school, the teaching approaches employed and the role of the arts and music in the overall educational experience at the school.
We look forward to the outcomes of her research which will help others understand the transformational experience of learning at Conservatory Lab and will help disseminate our best work around the world.
