Dear Families,
On Saturday, June 1, I watched an orchestra of 160 young musicians swaying together in the dance of string and bow. The music was breathtaking, and even more so was the story that brought them together. They came from every corner of the city, led by a dream that began thirty years ago in Venezuela and a network of supporters like you who strove together to make it a reality here.
When we began our El Sistema program three years ago, we were the only organization offering free, daily music instruction that changes the lives of children in the Greater Boston Area. Now this important work is being magnified in seven other programs throughout the city, where children are absorbing the passion and discipline of music and inspiring pride and hope within their communities. Last week, for the first time, founders of the original El Sistema came to Boston to experience our programs and to work with our students. They called Conservatory Lab "a model for El Sistema in the United States."
Through all of our combined efforts, Conservatory Lab has become a beacon for transformative education in Boston. Through El Sistema and Expeditionary Learning, our students have become fervent scholars who ask questions, make connections, and produce outstanding results. They are winning state-wide science poetry contests, conducting water quality surveys, and performing orchestral masterworks alongside professional ensembles like the Landmarks Symphony.
Wednesday's performance was yet another example. Once again, the K1, K2, and first grade ensembles rose to a new level of precision and musical complexity, laying the foundations for musical growth throughout our school. Each year, the ability of every ensemble becomes greater as children learn from and teach one another.
Warmly,

Diana Lam

Hemlock Gorge
On Friday, May 31st the 6th grade met geologist Les Tyrala where the Charles River flows through Hemlock Gorge in Needham. The purpose of their fieldwork was to understand the geologic history of the gorge to educate others about the fascinating ways glaciers and erosion have shaped the land over thousands of years.
Before proceeding down the trail together, Mr.Tyrala gathered the students to show them the tools he uses in his work as a geologist. He also shared many specimens, including his fossil dinosaur toe knuckle and a container of gold panned in his travels.

Mr. Tyrala's presentation was fascinating, but the heart of the fieldwork was the opportunity for each student to ask him questions about the specific geologic feature they were studying. After extensive online research, they had questions that only an expert geologist could help them answer as they looked together at the rocks themselves. They hiked together to visit each geologic formation- the gorge itself, a cave they learned was actually a grotto, puddingstone rocks, a rock with a fascinating crack...How did the gorge form? How did the grotto along the bank of the Charles River form? What caused large crack between two large rocks?
The 6th graders brought their notes and the information Mr. Tyrala shared with them back to the classroom. There they have been working hard all week to turn the story told by the rocks in the land into a comic book that tells the story of Hemlock Gorge's past.

Spring Concert I Wows!

The musical powers of the under-eight set from our school was amply displayed and felt on Wednesday, June 7th in the Pickman Concert Hall at Longy School of Music in Cambridge. The K-1 and K-2 Rockstars demonstrated showmanship, style and musicality far beyond their years and enough to make older more experienced performers sit up and take notice. Their rendition of "Steppin'out with the Bare Necessities" by Irving Berlin had the entire audience tappin' and clappin'. It was truly memorable!
Ms Rebecca Levi, for her farewell concert with Conservatory Lab, had the youngest students in the school give evidence of the enormous growth that they have made since last year. The K-2 Orchestra, which has only had real instruments since the last week in April this year, demonstrated that they are already poised and agile musicians and the Abreu String Orchestra astounded everyone when they played Mahler's Theme from Symphony 1. What a delightful performance given by delightful performers.

Third Grade Who done it?
On Friday, May 31st, 3rd graders and their families celebrated the end of their Mystery Reading and Writing Workshop unit. During the unit, students listened to many fabulous read alouds and learned about the unique shape, structure, and characteristics of the genre. They read more great mysteries with their partners and brainstormed together the character and plot for their own mystery stories. Each student created character sketches, giving each suspect a motive. The plots were laced with clues leading up to resolution. Student writers kept their families guessing until the final page!
