Greetings! The weather outside has been almost summer but Spring is soon upon us. We are working hard getting shipments in, clean up, and organizing the nursery for spring. A few new varieties and products are coming soon; like seed potatoes! With a tech upgrade we are also producing new YouTube Videos! Our hours for March are Monday to Saturday 9 to 5. April and May are Monday to Saturday 9 to 5 as well as Sundays 11 to 4.

What to do for March in Gardening A lot of things can be done in March, its a great time to plant perennials, trees, fruit trees and shrubs while they are still dormant. If you not sure what a plant looks like, you can wait for April through June when they leaf out. March is just the beginning of Spring and a great time of the year to plant. It's a little early for a lot of vegetables to be planted outside but you can get your peppers, tomatoes and eggplants started inside.
You can still do your thinning prunes at this time of the year as long as the plant has not leafed out. Click here for a list of plants that benefit from a winter prune. We like to wait until April 1 to fertilize so go ahead and get your supplies now but wait to apply the fertilizers when its a little warmer and the plants are actively taking nutrients. This also goes for the Annual Systemic Drenches too.
March is a windy month and typically this wind dries out the soil and foliage, it is best to water all evergreens and plants that are newly planted or fall planted. The middle of March is a great time to give them a drink of water. Here is a list of plants to water.
You can apply pre-emergent herbicides, like the Bonide Crabgrass and Weed Control or Preen, at this time of the year but apply these right before a good rain, so the water activates the product properly to prevent weeds. For me, I wait until the irrigation systems are on, so I can control the amount of water to make sure it is watered in properly and I don't have to worry about my pets getting into it while I wait for rain.

Fun New Plants Arriving Soon!
This year has some fun new varieties for the 2013 Season, they either have color, a neat little name or just new! Here is just a sample of what's to come in fun plants this year!
Spilled Wine Weiglea- A little dwarf red leaf plant that has a fun name. I selected it because of it's name mostly but 2 to 3 tall and wide with pink flowers and dwarf habit are great when dealing with a red leafed plant that has no thorns!
Show Off Forsythia- Show Off is a high powered Forsythia with medium habit 5 to 6 feet tall and wide. It loves to cover itself in blooms to welcome spring.
Amber Jubilee Ninebark- Amber Jubilee is a Ninebark of contrast instead of being dark like it popular cousins Diabolo, Centerglow and Little Devil; Amber Jubilee glows with oranges, golds and yellow. Amber Jubilee reaches 5 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide. A real beauty for foliage interest.
Atomic Red Trumpet Vine-A variety with a name that fits our area that is a durable, red flowering vine that loves sunlight and with plenty of water our winds as well.
Ruby Falls Redbud- A weeping red leafed variety of Redbud to give us great interest with cascading, twisted branches. The jury is still out on if it's more durable than Forest Pansy Redbud (a sometimes delicate variety), but at least for now, plant it in a wind protected spot; it can handle full sun.
