Changing the color of the room is the first thing you want to do when you move in, right? Perhaps, your builder or contractor is pressuring you to make a decision in choosing the colors right away. The truth is that most interior designers choose walls and trim color last. If you think about it, your furniture, drapes and accessories are much more difficult to find within your budget and style.
If you have plans on moving to a new house think about furniture, upholstery and collect as many fabric swatches and samples until you find the ones that you love. A lot of online and brick-and-mortar furniture stores would gladly provide you with fabric samples if you asked them. Start your collecting process at least six months before moving or renovation. Make sure to order more than one set of swatches because many fabrics can be discontinued within six months or even sooner.
Always start thinking about colors when the rug is selected. Let us say your living room is 14 feet wide and 20 feet long, most likely you will have a rug at least 8 feet by 10 feet (It is recommended to use a larger size rug). However, your rug is still the largest chunk of color that will interact with everything else in the room, so your paint colors can easily be drawn from the rug pattern. It always works better this way.
A close floor plan layout consists of living room that has all four walls and a door much like an apartment or an older house. With a close floor plan, you will have more paint choices and can pick colors within different colors from light to dark spectrum. Darker paint color adds excitement to a room with closed floor plan. You can accentuate beautiful moldings and other ceiling details with accent colors.
If your living room is open to the foyer and the kitchen, be more careful in your color choices. It is much better to choose lighter paint color for an open living room adjacent to the kitchen and the hallway. You still can bring in accent colors on certain walls as you infuse the space with darker accent walls.
Floor to ceiling height is one of the determining factors for choosing paint color. If floor to ceiling height of the living room is 8 feet, choose a lighter ceiling paint to make the room look better. For 9 feet and higher ceilings, you can be more creative.
If you have a large and a lot of windows in a room, you can go with a very dark color paint. What will happen is that the windows will become the highlight of the room as dark walls will recede.
