If You Could Fix One Thing In Your Skiing, This Is It!

PSIA Nordic Demo Team Tip

Fundamentals, they carry the success of all athletes.  Same goes for XC skiers.

The fundamental skill that will unlock your full potential is very simple: body position("ing").  Since your equipment and the terrain you ski are never static and always changing, your body position is really a body position("ing"). You rarely get into one position and just stay there, instead you master a few fundamentals in order to adjust and compensate for the changes in terrain and equipment position.

So let' start with what good body position is.

You know the look: rounded shoulders, rounded spine, knees bent, ankles flexed, hips over your ankle bones, weight just behind the ball of your foot.

Easy to do when you're not skating up a steep hill!

The key component of mastering the fundamentals of Body Position is mastering the idea of functional tension.  Functional tension allows you to flex and extend, climb up hills and switch gears and zoom over variable terrain with the greatest of ease. Functional tension puts the "ing" in body position

ing

If you can do this on dry land, how do you translate it into actual skiing?  Easy, ski backwards.

Stand backwards at the top of a moderate hill.  Put your skis in a "V," just like your normal skate stance going up a hill.  Start sliding backwards a few feet and stop.  Don't use your poles.  Stop by widening your stance and smearing your skis in a reverse snow plow.  Put one hand on your butt and another hand on your stomach.  Bend your knees and flex your ankles and sink down.  Feel your butt resist pushing backwards.  With the other hand feel your stomach muscles tightening.  Slide down the hill and stop as many times as you can.  Every time you stop, check your stance.  You've got to make sure your butt isn't back!

Remember, you CAN'T lie to the hill. If you're not in an efficient body position, the hill will tell you. If you do it correctly, you won't get any wobble, slipping or pitching forward.

After mastering the backward slide, try a backward slide and stop. Then, ski up that same hill forward, keeping your hands on your stomach and butt. Maintain that same functional tension. Now stop, slide backward. Stop, ski forward. Stop, backward. Stop, forward. You get the idea? Ski several cycles of this drill till mastery.

Good body position means applying functional tension as you pole and climb, resisting the urge to let your butt fall backwards or your upper body to pitch forward.  The ultimate goal is to maintain a dynamic body positioning.  Everyone can duplicate a good stance while they are standing still, but it's much harder to maintain great body positioning while skiing.

Can I ski like Petter?

From April 4

Petter Northug Jr. gets lots of attention for his amazing acceleration speed.I would like to know what specific technique skills enable him to be so much better than all other top racers. Many of us would love to practice the ski movements that make him go fast. Thanks

RE

Dear RE,

When I assess Northugs' skiing technique, I see several key elements that distinguish him from other skiers;

1.   He maintains a very stable body position with little change in body position and range of movements between race pace and sprinting.

2.    When he shifts gears he maintains full range of movements while increasing the quickness of the poling and kicking movements. It appears that there is a dramatic increase in frequency or tempo but I believe it to be more related to the incredible speed of his movements. (Remember range of movement or stride length, increases with speed.  So increase stride length or range of movement is an effect of increased power output)

3.    Even at maximal speed you can see relaxed movements patterns and a relaxation phase at the finish of each movement. For the movements to be quick they have to be relaxed.

4.    Most important is the timing and the quickness of the weight shift. Petter's weight shift, center of mass, movement is early, quick, and complete. The early initiation adds impulse to the kick and helps to keep the hips/center of mass up and forward.

5.    While I have no information to support this, I believe Northug must practice his accelerations very often in training to maintain good technique at very high speeds and to develop the physiological capacity.

Classic Technique

From March 28

Hi guys. I'm a beginner who is starting to "get it". One thing I see the pros do is move their foot/leg forward on the glide ski. Instead of bringing the ski after the push-off phase under the body, they seem to move it forward, much like a track runner. Is the "soccer kick" that some instructional videos emphasize? If so, is there a drill or exercise to practice this. I like this sport and want to improve!

Thanks for your time!

Bob

Bob

Thanks for your question. It is a great question and what you are seeing refers to a discreet phase of the diagonal stride and is the result of a series correctly executed integrated movements.  I am going to summarize your question using a series of video captures that I used in a technique presentation that can be found on my web site.

jimgalanes.com/

Obviously effective technique is not static and images only capture a moment in time ( each of these occurring in fractions of a second) in which the movements are executed.

classic technique

The image series reads

from the far right Frame #1, to the far left Frame 7

Frame #1-Zero Position

   classic 7

  • Hip high and forward of the ankle.
  • Upper Body angled forward, projecting forward between 50-60 degrees.
  • Body-Falling forward.
  • Knees comfortably flexed.
  • This body position is optimal for an effective kick, forward drive, and good weight shift.

USSA National J2 Camp

Supported by NNF

The fourth edition of the USSA National J2 Camp will be held Saturday July 27 to Saturday August 3, 2013 in Marquette, Michigan. The National J2 Camp brings together the top J2 Boys and Girls from across the Country for a week of intensive training and ski sport education as one the first steps in the USSA National Development Pipeline.

The National Nordic Foundation has designated the J2 Camp as one of its Pillar Projects and has been instrumental in helping the J2 Camp project grow into one of our country's key development initiatives.  The camp rotates in location throughout the country and this year's camp will be held on the Northern Michigan University Campus, home to the always powerful NMU NCAA Ski Team.  US Ski Team staff will lead the camp along with a selection of top regional coaches.  Selection for the camp is based on results from US Junior Championships, recently completed in Fairbanks, Alaska. In addition to the automatic selections of the top twenty boys and top twenty girls based on JN results, each USSA division is afforded two discretionary picks of one boy and one girl, in addition to however many may have qualified via the JN selection procedure.

It is the responsibility of each USSA Division to select these additional skiers and forward those selections onto the camp director, Rick Kapala of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, rick@svsef.org.

Attendees are required to organize their own flights or ground transport into Marquette, MI to arrive on Saturday, July 27  and to depart on the following Saturday, August 3rd.  Lodging, meals and all associated camp costs are included in the camp fee of $585.00.   Skiers who have been selected through the JN selection procedure may immediately confirm their attendance by emailing Camp Director  Rick Kapala at rick@svsef.org.  Participants will receive a comprehensive registration packet upon confirmation. The Final date for confirmation is Friday May 24, 2013.
