 Molybdenum or Graphite

When should one use Molybdenum or Graphite waxes?

Confused Waxer

It is very simple. Moly for dirt and Graphite for new cold snow.

Start uses Moly as a dry lubricant in its BM Line only for dirty snow, including course artificial (dirty) snow. Start uses Graphite as an underlayer for static electricity neutralization necessary in cold dry snow that is less than 24 hours old.  Yes some people recommend Moly with every application, perhaps because it makes the plastic scraper feel good when sliding across the ski.  If you were skiing across plastic Start would recommend Moly. Hopefully this winter new clean snow will be abundant and we can avoid Moly but use Graphite.

 PSIA Nordic Instructor Tips

 Professional Ski Instructors of America

One thing at time

According to a recent presentation on Skills Acquisition by Warren Pretorius of Dartfish (a pioneering video analysis software company), it takes 6 hours of practicing a new skill for the new movement pattern to become 'cemented.' Since most of us don't, can't or won't ski for 6 hours, this practice probably takes place over a few training sessions. Introducing a new skill or focus prior to solidifying the skill being practiced will result in a deterioration of the skill being learned. Not exactly breaking news, but a great reminder to enthusiastic coaches and instructors eager to disgorge their (sometimes newfound) knowledge about all aspects of technique.

Try this: In your own skiing or coaching, let one aspect of technique remain the sole focus for a training week (of a few sessions) or weeks, if only skiing once a week. If tired, rather that choose a new focus, take a break so that the practice allows the desired performance rather than the tired performance. Get the most out of training time by letting one 'main idea' take hold, rather than dislodge it with new information. Take the long view and acquire and imprint skills that will serve for a lifetime.
