COAST 4 U QUARTERLY

Issue No. 8
Spring 2013

Dear Friend of the Coast,

The Public Education Program is winding down its spring "earth fair" season - which included helping kids make "whale promises." What is your personal Whale Promise? May I suggest that you peruse this issue of COAST4U quarterly and www.coastforyou.org for ideas along these lines - there are so many ways to engage with and help our coast and ocean.

Marine debris remains a key threat. The debris that is hitting our shores as a result of the Japan tsunami of 2011 reminds us of a tragic natural disaster. As Eben Schwartz pointed out in a previous newsletter article - we can't prevent the accidental release of debris to the ocean, but we can do something about the multiple "tsunamis of debris" we inflict on the ocean each year through our own carelessness.

Tsunami Debris Washes Ashore in California

Japanese boat found in Crescent City
Japanese text marks the side of the boat recovered along Crescent City's shores, April 7th

Crescent City, one of the last cities found along the beautiful northern California coast before you reach Oregon and home to the famous Battery Point Lighthouse, now has another claim to fame. On April 7th, the first confirmed piece of debris from the Japan Tsunami to hit California washed up on the shores of a local beach. The 20-foot boat that was found was traced back to Takata High School in Japan's Iwata Province, an area that was devastated by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. California now joins its west coast neighbors Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Hawaii, and British Columbia on the list of areas where tsunami debris has been confirmed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Japanese Government.

Making A Whale Promise

A Whale Promise

On May 15th at State Scientists Day in Sacramento, California Coastal Commission's Public Education staff conducted an activity that engaged hundreds of kids to see their approximate size in comparison to a blue whale. They were given the option to represent their inch-&-a-half selves in crayon next to a four-foot blue whale.

Public Education staff then asked students to make a Whale Promise to do their best to protect the air, water, and food that a whale needs to be healthy.
