Outside Influences - Coming and Going

February was a busy month for guest speakers - including a special guest panel to celebrate Black History Month. Ron Dotzler, Twany Dotzler, and Ron Smith - highly effective game changers in the city of Omaha. Personal narratives spanning interracial marriage, racial encounters, the infamous "N-Word," classism, and other barriers were openly and honestly shared and explored by the panel.

February also saw second- and third-year students attend a two-day conference called Meet the Pros, produced and sponsored by AAF-Omaha. Students were able to listen to local and national speakers, have their portfolios and resumes reviewed, and attend local agency tours, all while networking with some of the biggest names in the local advertising scene.

Graduate of the Month
BVinson

Brandon Vinson
BFA '10
Graphics and Production Assistant at NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) in Norfolk, VA

High School:
Bellevue East HS in Bellevue, NE

What does the company do?
POLITICAL - NATO promotes democratic values and encourages consultation and cooperation on defense and security issues to build trust and, in the long run, prevent conflict.
MILITARY - NATO is committed to the peaceful resolution of disputes. If diplomatic efforts fail, it has the military capacity needed to undertake crisis-management operations. These are carried out under Article 5 of the Washington Treaty - NATO's founding treaty - or under a UN mandate, alone or in cooperation with other countries and international organizations.

What does the graduate do? I am a member of the U.S. Navy, and am responsible for all graphics and print production requests. My shop handles customers from all over the world and our work demands quality and efficiency.

Clients: All 28 NATO nations along with any civilian personnel within our command that may require assistance.

Comments: I never thought I would be doing this job in the military, but here I am almost 5 years later. I have seen so much of the world and had priceless experiences. I've learned so much from the people I've worked with, and through this experience I was made Graphic Artist of the Year in the entire Navy in 2013. Moments like those make it really worth it and confirms that I'm doing something great and that others appreciate.
