Suicide
Suicide Prevention Month

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. Some goals of National Suicide Prevention Month are to raise awareness about suicide, increase dialogue and ultimately save lives. A 2013 study completed by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), indicated that that suicide was the 10th leading cause of death for Americans. The study also found that someone in the United States died by suicide every 12.8 minutes. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people. These numbers are astounding for many individuals. Primarily because many people may not personally know someone who has committed suicide. However, more people than expected know someone who has attempted suicide or been impacted by the suicide of a loved one. There are many resources available for those who are in need of help. It is important to know the warning signs for individuals who are at risk for attempting suicide. We'd like to share these signs with you and hope that you will share with others.
  • Increased use of drugs or alcohol
  • Threats of self-harm or suicide. It should not be taken lightly if someone says phrases like "I wish I wasn't here" or "I just want to end it all"
  • Withdrawal from friends, families and activities that were once enjoyable

Client Spotlight: Brandon

As a high school student, Brandon attended a private, therapeutic day school with small structured classrooms. He always felt uncomfortable speaking to large crowds and working with people. He isolated himself as a youth and had limited experience communicating with people. The thought of filling out job applications was terrifying.
Brandon came to Kenneth Young Center through a referral from the Illinois Department of Rehabilitation Services (DORS). Upon coming to KYC, Brandon was set up with a job counselor in the Employment Services program.

Through the program, Brandon learned important components of finding a jobsuch as resume writing and interviewing skills. He participated in KYC's interviewing group which meets on Fridays. Participants of the group watch videos on interviewing and give feedback on the various scenarios. Additionally, job counselors teach clients about body language and how to prepare for potential questions.

Thank
Thank You

We would like to thank the employees of Optum for their generous donation of backpacks and school supplies to help the families of Kenneth Young Center (KYC). Many of the families who receive services from KYC are at or below poverty level and the donation will help to alleviate some of the financial strain which they may face. We appreciate Optum's commitment to help KYC's youth and their and families.

We would also like the thank Reverend David Lagos-Fonseca and the congregation at Our Saviour's United Methodist Church for hosting an ice cream social on Sunday, September 13, to benefit Kenneth Young Center.  The event had a great turn out and many items were donated as part of a silent auction. Great food, inspirational music and lots of ice cream was enjoyed by all attendees. We are truly grateful for their continued support of KYC and our clients.
