Summer Solstice Walk

Saturday, June 20, 2015 4:00PM - 8:00 PM

Fish Park

West Sound Wildlife will have 6-8 stations set up, each with live educational ambassador and its handler. Depending on which education animals are available that day, you could see a turkey vulture, owls, a red-tailed hawk, a peregrine falcon, a kestrel and an opossum, not to mention the natural wildlife in the park.

Tours are approximately 40 minutes long and start every 15 minutes beginning at 4:00PM. The walk is free to the public but we ask that you RSVP (click here) for a specific tour so we know how many people to expect and what time.

New Coast Guard Boating App

The Coast Guard has released its first boating safety app, as the kickoff to this year's National Safe Boating Week.

The app will be available on the Apple and Google Play online stores.

The boating safety app was not designed to replace a boater's VHF radio, which the Coast Guard strongly recommends all boaters have onboard their vessels. The app is designed to provide additional boating safety resources for mobile device users.

For more information about the app, please visit http://www.uscg.mil/mobile or contact Lt. Anastacia Visneski at 202-372-4648.

Thefts from Vehicles

First, the weather has begin to warm up and with that we have seen the traditional increase in car prowlers.  A reminder to not leave things of value in plain sight.  If you need to leave something in your car, put it in the trunk or somewhere out of sight.  If possible, park your vehicles in the driveway, not on the street.  Add a motion sensor light to the front of your house as an extra way to scare off the thieves.  These crimes are about convenience for most thieves.  Help us help you, by making it as inconvenient as possible.

3rd of July

The 3rd of July celebration is just around the corner!

The festivities will be along Poulsbo's historic downtown and waterfront.

Hope to see you there!

News From the Mayor's Desk

May was a month of celebrations and festivals. With the grand celebration for Ardis Morrow and Bill Austin on May 2nd, Viking Fest on May 17th and the King of Norway on May 21st and 22nd, it was hard to catch my breath with all the activity. King Harald V could not come to Poulsbo this year. Instead, he was awarded an honorary degree from Pacific Lutheran University for PLU's 125th anniversary. Kitsap County Commissioner Rob Gelder and I were invited to a private reception where we both met the King. The gala on Friday the 21st was an amazing event held at the Seattle Sheraton Hotel where I met Congressmen Rick Larsen and Jim McDermott, Mayor Ed Murray of Seattle and Secretary of State Brad Owens.

Our parks and public pathways continue to grow. Our most recent pathway connects Fish Park to Nelson Park under Lindvig Bridge (pictures below). Soon, a volunteer group from Poulsbo Rotary will finish the path on the Nelson Park end, creating an easy walk between the parks. I continue to work on a trail to connect 7th Avenue to 4th Avenue providing a walking pathway from Highway 305 to Torval Canyon and Front Street. Additionally, plans are in the works for a walking pathway that will stretch from the end of Caldart through Forest Rock Hills Park and down to the new bicycle pump track on Little Valley Road.

Viking Fest is always a wonderful time in Poulsbo. The crowds were large and well mannered. Thank you to Kathi Forsee, Tony Smallbeck, and the entire Viking Fest Corporation for all their hard volunteer work. Police Chief Al Townsend drove Senator Christine Rolfes, Commissioner Rob Gelder and I in the parade on May 16th. We were in the brand new Poulsbo Police car tossing treats to parade spectators. Note to self: More treats next year! We ran low mid-way through Front Street. Second note to self: Next year it will be sugarless treats!

These last several months I chaired a regional group within Puget Sound Regional Council called the Project Selection Task Force. The task force recommended a policy to direct the federal funding for roads and transit in King, Kitsap, Pierce and Snohomish Counties. These were tough meetings that decided the direction of almost $690 million dollars. Of the $690 million, most of the money is Federal Transit Authority (FTA) funds and will be distributed to Sound Transit, Metro, Community Transit (Snohomish County), Pierce County Transit and Kitsap Transit. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) distributes about $229 million of which 20% will be dedicated to preservation of our existing road infrastructure. Unfortunately, this does not really address all the needed preservation projects, especially the number of bridges that need to be repaired. The task force will reconvene in the fall.

A pre-application meeting was held for the purchasers of the old City Hall property. The development team is proposing a mixed use development with bottom floor retail and several floors of apartments. The initial sketches of the building are beautiful; designed by Cutler Anderson Architects from Bainbridge Island. There continues to be active interest in the old Police Station property. We hope we will soon have a finalized agreement for its sale.

Work on the Behavioral Health Specialist continues with a contract for Kitsap Mental Health coming to the City Council in June. This position is grant funded and will provide mental health support in the Municipal Courts of Poulsbo and Port Orchard, a first of its kind program in the state.

Lastly, the City of Poulsbo is hosting a meeting for all Viking Avenue business and land owners. It will be held on June 8th at Hudson Motors at 5:00 PM. For further information, please contact Jan Harrison, Business Development Director for the City of Poulsbo, at jan@jharrisonsolutions.com.

Capital Project Updates

Decant Facility and Solid Waste Transfer Station at 22125 Viking Way

Construction is expected to be completed by June 30th. The building has been framed and the bathroom has been set and installed. Fencing will be added to this property soon.

3rd Ave/Central Business District LID Improvements

This project is wrapping up; the modular wetlands for the stormwater improvements have been installed throughout the business district.

6th and 9th Avenue Pump Stations Upgrades

Construction on this project began on May 18th. The upgrades to the 6th Avenue Station will affect the surrounding vicinity of the bathrooms in Lions Park. In addition, the large Cherry tree near the Lions Park bathroom will be removed to make way for a new generator. New landscaping will be installed to mitigate the tree removal. Please note that parking will be reduced by 4 parking stalls on Matson Street at Lions Park for the staging of materials during the project. A new swing set will also be installed in an alternative location this summer. The new swings are on order, and should be delivered by the end of June. They will be placed just north of the existing swing site. The new, blue swings should be in by the end of June! Construction related to the 6th Avenue Station will also take place for the length of Matson Street for the installation of the water and sewer force main. A small portion of 9th Avenue will be affected for the connection of the sewer force main to the gravity sewer system. The upgrades for the 9th Avenue Station will take place from the intersection at 9th and Fjord to Nordness Street. Construction will also take place for the entire length of Nordness Street and Thompson Place. Construction on these two pump stations is expected to be complete in October.
