Hippocrates Cafe-RIS On Friday evening, May 9th, Dr. Jon Hallberg directed an amazing performance using professional actors (including Guthrie legend Raye Birk, left)  and musicians. 'Stories of Sarcoma Journeys" exhibited the human side of sarcoma cancer-trials, loss, lessons, and laughs. Click here to view pictures from the evening. A special YouTube video highlighting the more then twenty stories submitted has also been produced. To watch, click here.

"The evening spent with Hippocrates Café was both heartbreaking and heartwarming. Dr. Jon Hallberg and his talented ensemble of actors and musicians handled our precious sarcoma stories with masterful precision. For one evening, the insidious nature of sarcoma cancer was muted by this thoughtful and intensely moving performance. Thank you Hippocrates Café and Rein in Sarcoma for an evening of courage and compassion."

In 2012, Mark Wehner was diagnosed with his third battle with sarcoma cancer. I found out about it in March just before the volleyball-sized tumor was removed from his abdomen. We had a very scary and tearful conversation about how ill he was right before his surgery.  I said I wanted to do something to help. Mark was "too sick to argue" as he puts it, and said we would talk about it more when he successfully came out of surgery. That has always been our attitude for both "Celebration of Life" and the Wehner family. I started to make phone calls and got alumni Laura Spaeth, Nikki Lafky, and Brian Bethke on board to create the first "Celebration of Life", which at the time did not have a name.

Click here to read the full story how four alumni came together to support Mark Wehner on his battle against sarcoma cancer. A video of the the 2014 "Celebration of Life" event is found here.

If you are a Sarcoma patient, survivor, or have lost a relative to Sarcoma, we invite you and close loved ones to join us for a celebration of life, caring, and a plain old "good time" at RIS 2014 Sarcoma Family Picnic, Monday afternoon, July 28th starting at 4:30 pm. Join with others to share common experiences, to gain and offer support. Sarcoma doctors and researchers from the University of Minnesota, The Mayo Clinic, and Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota will join you to socialize and visit informally.  We thank American Family Insurance for their continuing sponsorship. While the Picnic is free, advanced registration by Monday, July 21st is required. Register here.
