On April 10 & 11, 2014, Rein in Sarcoma attended the 2104 Minnesota Academy of Family Practice Physicians Conference. Orthopedic Surgeon and Board Member, Dr. Christian Ogilvie, was the centerpiece of our efforts to educate family practice doctors about sarcoma and gave a well-attended seminar.

We handed out our brochures and our Doctor information cards that were developed by our Medical Advisory Committee. We are planning to bring this message to other groups of medical professionals.

The 5th annual Mini-Medical School highlighted promising sarcoma research being conducted by the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine.

Attendees heard thought provoking  presentations on: Why we study cancer in companion animals, angiosarcoma, and how we use 'bugs' and the immune system to cure osteosarcoma.

Why study cancer in dogs? It is the most common cause of death in dogs, accounting for 25-30 percent mortality. Dogs have similar characteristics to humans as far as biological properties, risk and clinical behavior. A dog's shorter lifespan compresses the time needed to understand the impact of particular sarcoma therapies.

Afterwards, attendees had an opportunity to visit with researchers and have a 'behind the scene' tour of the new Center for Magnetic Resonance Research, seeing state of the art high-field MRI's and molecular imaging.

Thank you to Dr. Katheryn Dusenbery for organizing such a fascinating event. And, thanks to Jaime Modiano for organizing his team of researchers to educate us about cancer research in dogs.

In July 2014, the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine will be giving tours. We look forward to those tours this summer. Stay tuned for more details.
