RIS Gathering
Sunday, January 26 with Ann Reed
J oin us for a special RIS Gathering featuring legendary performer and songwriter Ann Reed. This free event is designed for Sarcoma patients,survivors, and those who have lost someone to sarcoma. Please join us to share your sarcoma stories and to meet Kate Bottiger, RIS's new Executive Director.
Ann Reed has a long, storied career, which has included appearances on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion, ABC's Good Morning America, and NPR's Morning Edition.
RIS is beginning to work on an original production of our Sarcoma Stories that will be presented in the spring. This special Hippocrates Care Productions is being coordinated by our Sarcoma Scholars and Dr. Jon Hallberg. It will feature your stories, poems, and essays performed by professional actors. At the Gathering, the scholars will tell us how this project will work and then we will pass the microphone, share our stories and our support for one another.

again will again host this RIS Gathering in the beautiful Heritage room at the Lyndale Avenue Bachman's store. Ruth will also be signing her wonderful new book with proceeds to RIS. While the RIS Gathering is free, advanced registration is required by Jan. 23rd. Learn more and to register...

The 2014 annual Mud Dog Ride for RIS in memory of snowmobile rider Eric Skogman will be held February 6-9 at the Shooting Star Casino Hotel & Event Center in Mahnomen,in conjunction with the MN United Snowmobilers Association Winter Rendezvous. Eric lost his battle with Sarcoma in 2011, but his friends continue this ride in his honor. This year an anonymous donor is issuing a $1,500 Mud Dog Challenge Grant! This donor has committed to match all Mud Dog paid pledges through Saturday, February 9th or when the challenge is met. Please donate to the Mud Dogs effort to end sarcoma!The 2014 Ride is again being organized by Joel Mellenthin, Midwest Sports Publishing Network (MSPN) and Eric's many friends. - HandsOn Twin Cities - February 15
Volunteers needed to help staff the HandsOn Twin Cities Volunteer Expo at the Mall of America on Saturday, February 15, 2014. This is a great opportunity for RIS to speak face-to-face with lots of potential volunteers and network with other organizations. If you are interested in covering in a 10:30 am or 12:30 pm shift, please contact Nancy Hendrickson.
Kevin O'Keefe is assembling a great leadership team for this year's Party in the Park on July 28th, but we need your support and volunteering to make it really extrodinary! The Board of Directors of RIS wishes to thank all of you who made generous contributions to Rein in Sarcoma in 2013. Because of your support we begin 2014 in a strong position for growing our work. Thanks to your generosity the Board will be awarding Research Grants next month in addition to some significant new educational initiatives. None of this is possible without each of you joining in the fight for a world free of sarcoma.

Research News
A deadly, rare type of soft-tissue cancer may be completely eradicated simply by inhibiting a key protein involved in its growth. In a research study published on-line on December 26 in Cell Reports by UT Southwestern Medical Center, researchers scientists reported that inhibiting the action of a protein called BRD4 caused cancer cells to die in a mouse model of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs). For over a decade, Jaime Modiano, V.M.D., Ph.D., from the U of M College of Veterinary Medicine, has collaborated with researchers from Ohio State University, and North Carolina State University in efforts to understand more about Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) and how it affects both canines and humans. Research from this collaborative partnership has started to make progress in determining whether osteosarcoma is the same in canines and humans. Their initial findings suggest that if the diseases aren't identical, they're close to being the same. To learn more. Upcoming RIS Events
- RIS Annual Meeting - January 28
The KWRISF annual meeting, including elections of Board members and officers will be held on Tuesday evening, January 28th. To learn more contact Board Chairperson, Pete Wyckoff.
- RIS 2014 Mini Medical School - "Going to the Dogs"
Dr Modiano and the staff of the U of M College of Veterinary Medicine will coordinate the annual mini-medical school with Dr. Katherine Dusenbery this coming spring. The mini-medical school will take place at the Vet School on the St. Paul Campus. More details will be available in the February update. This free event is open to all Rein in Sarcomas supporters. The number of attendees will be limited so watch for registration information.
- Family Practice Conference Spring Refresher- April 11 and 12
- Dr. Christian Ogilvie will be speaking at the 2014 "Spring Refresher, Painting the Future of Family Practice". His presentation is entitled is "Sarcoma's: What Should I do about this bump" The conference is for Family Practice Doctors who are often the first to see sarcoma patients and Dr. Ogilvie will be making them aware of what to look for in a sarcoma diagnosis. The RIS Red Flags committee will be staffing a booth at the conference to pass out information developed by our Medical Advisory Board. - Save the Date - 2014 Party in the Park & Sarcoma Family Picnic- July 28th

The Karen Wyckoff Rein in Sarcoma Foundation is the primary sarcoma cancer foundation in the upper Midwest. Our mission is "dedicated to educating the public and medical community about sarcomas, supporting sarcoma patients and their loved ones, and funding research directed toward developing new treatments and finding a cure for sarcoma cancers." We are an all-volunteer non-profit organization, which allows over 92% of our revenues to directly support our mission!
