Major Gift for Research

Hallie BrownIn memory of their granddaughter Hallie Anne Brown, who died of osteosarcoma this past April, Dr and Mrs John Seymour have established RIS's newest named Fund. Their $30,000 donation to the Hallie Anne Brown Fund is the largest individual gift ever received by RIS and will significantly assist both our funding of osteosarcoma research and our transitional initiative.

Hallie was born in 1996 to Kathryn and Todd Brown. Early in life she showed precocious athleticism. By age 6 she was able to do a front handspring followed by a back flip. But soccer soon became her first love and she rapidly became a skillful player. The symptoms of her sarcoma were first noticed the day of here first ninth grade soccer practice in the spring of 2012. Hallie was very direct and candid in discussing her cancer, but she could still be a goofy kid during her struggle against her disease.   Read more about Hallie and her fund...
Our eighth annual Rein in Sarcoma Garage sale was held in early September, and beautiful weather, eager shoppers and outstanding volunteers combined to produce our most successful garage sale ever.  Over 40 RIS supporters donated a wide variety of items, including clothes, books, housewares, electronics, fine furniture and art. 22 volunteers not only sorted, priced, set up, staged, staffed and sold an amazing array of merchandise  but they spread the sarcoma story and awareness to the a large number of visitors . When all sales were tallied, over $5,200 was raised for RIS, which is a record and a 33% increase over 2012!  Read more...
Jule Chu
Dr. Julie Chu, a Hematology-Oncology physician at Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, is a dedicated and caring doctor. And when her sarcoma patient is a child, she also tends to the family members. Pediatric cancer medicine is very family-centered, and the wishes, feelings and perspectives of the parents will impact the care of their child.

To Dr Chuy, each child is a person, not a number or a diagnosis, and she knows that many different aspects of an individual patient will impact that patient's illness, care and ability to cope with their treatment regime. To read more about Dr. Chu's practice, and to learn her favorite colors,

Help us "Get to the Max" - Nov 14th
Rein in Sarcoma is again pleased to be participating in this November's Give to the Max Day. Last year we were able to raise  $19,315 from 77 donors during this statewide day of giving, thanks in-part to RIS donors who gave $5,000 in challenge gifts to encourage others to participate in this fund-raising event. If you would like to consider encouraging others to give to RIS by pledging a "2013 Challenge Gift" to this year's Give to the Max Day, please contact Pete Wyckoff  (651-486-9114) for further information.

The Power of the Sunflower
When Karen Wyckoff chose the sunflower in 2001 as our symbol for the cure of sarcoma cancer, she could not have chosen a more appropriate or powerful symbol.  According to a new book on interesting facts by John Loyd and John Michinson, "Per gram per second, more energy runs through the sunflower than through the sun itself."   Working together we can harness that power for a cure.
Sarcoma Patient Notebook - 4th

The new Fourth Edition RIS Sarcoma Patient Starter Notebook has just been released. The new edition includes major revisions including QR codes that allow print readers with "smart phones" to directly access key resources in Minnesota and around the country. The Notebook is provided free of charge to newly diagnosed sarcoma patients and to medical facilities in Minnesota and will be sent to patients free of charge around the country, upon request.
